A Government Affairs Intern supports an organization's advocacy efforts by conducting policy research, tracking legislation, attending hearings, and assisting with communications. They may help draft policy briefs, prepare reports, and coordinate meetings with lawmakers or stakeholders. This role provides valuable experience in understanding government processes, public policy, and legislative affairs.
As a Government Affairs Intern, you will typically assist with tracking and analyzing legislative developments, preparing policy summaries, and supporting advocacy initiatives. Common responsibilities include researching relevant government policies, preparing briefing materials, attending hearings or meetings, and helping with the organization's outreach efforts to policymakers. You may also be tasked with drafting correspondence, organizing events, and maintaining databases of legislative contacts. This hands-on experience provides exposure to the legislative process and strengthens your understanding of how organizations shape public policy.
To thrive as a Government Affairs Intern, you need strong research, analytical, and written communication skills, often supported by coursework in political science, public policy, or related fields. Familiarity with legislative tracking tools, databases, and Microsoft Office Suite is common, while some roles may also use specialized advocacy software. Strong organization, attention to detail, and the ability to build professional relationships help interns stand out in this position. These capabilities are crucial for effectively supporting policy analysis, monitoring legislative developments, and facilitating communication between an organization and government entities.
