Job description

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets. We are more than 34,000 people, in over 30 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play.

With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together. Role description: Arcadis is seeking a Biologist Intern/Co-op to join our Ecological Services team in Markham, ON or Waterloo, ON for a 4- or 8-month co-op term in January 2027. This role provides an excellent opportunity for a student to gain hands-on experience supporting ecological assessments, environmental permitting, and field-based data collection projects.

As an Intern/Co-op Biologist, you will work alongside experienced biologists and environmental professionals to support a variety of ecological projects throughout Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). You will contribute to field surveys, data collection, technical reporting, and environmental planning initiatives while developing practical skills in environmental consulting and stewardship. This role offers exposure to multidisciplinary project teams and the opportunity to build a strong foundation in applied ecology, regulatory processes, and environmental assessment work.

Role Accountabilities In this role, you will support the Ecological Services team by: Assisting with terrestrial and aquatic field surveys, including flora and fauna inventories and habitat assessments. Supporting data collection efforts using GPS equipment, mobile field applications, and other environmental monitoring tools. Conducting desktop research, literature reviews, and background studies to support environmental assessments and permitting requirements.

Assisting with the preparation of technical reports, field summaries, maps, and environmental documentation. Supporting environmental permitting activities and regulatory applications under the guidance of senior staff. Collaborating with biologists, ecologists, environmental scientists, planners, engineers, and project managers on multidisciplinary projects.

Participating in field programs that may require travel, occasional overnight stays, and outdoor work in a variety of weather and terrain conditions. Qualifications & Experience Candidates should have a strong interest in terrestrial and aquatic ecology and environmental consulting, along with excellent organizational, communication, and technical writing skills. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.

This position requires a willingness to conduct fieldwork, including hiking and working outdoors for extended periods in a variety of terrain and weather conditions, while consistently following Arcadis health and safety procedures during field and office activities. A valid driver's license and the ability to travel to project sites as needed are also required. Required Qualifications Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications Previous coursework, research, volunteer experience, or co-op/internship experience related to ecology, biology, or environmental sciences. Familiarity with species identification, habitat assessments, or field survey techniques. Experience using GPS devices, GIS software, or environmental data collection tools.

Interest in pursuing a Registered Biologist (RPBio) designation in the future. Why Arcadis. We can only achieve our goals when everyone is empowered to be their best.
