APM Terminals
Purpose
Under direct supervision, the Intern will support the Interface and Integration Department. This internship offers hands-on experience with system integration, automation design concepts, and exposure to real world engineering and operational challenges in a global port environment. The intern will work alongside experienced engineers and project teams to help test, document, and improve automated terminal systems.
Job Responsibilities
Under supervision, the intern may perform the following:
Technical Support
• Assist in testing and validation of automated terminal systems (PLCs, SCADA, HMIs, and related equipment), including supporting analysis of system performance and issues
• Help gather and document technical interface specifications for equipment, software, and infrastructure.
• Support the configuration and updating of systems under the supervision of senior engineers.
Project & Vendor Collaboration
• Contribute to vendor coordination activities during design reviews, testing, installation, and commissioning.
• Assist in tracking changes, documenting progress, and preparing materials for project meetings.
Process Improvement
• Work with terminal stakeholders to identify improvement opportunities related to safety, productivity, efficiency and quality.
• Help maintain documentation to support integration of vendor solutions into internal engineering standards.
Safety & Compliance
• Participate in safety walk-throughs, ensure project activities follow internal safety policies and escalate any issues of non-compliance.
• Support preparation of compliance documentation and reporting as needed.
• Other duties, and projects as assigned.
Qualifications/Skills/Experience
• Eligible to work in the U.S. Education - applicants currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in: Control/Automation Engineering; Computer Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Industrial Engineering; or a related technical field.
Desired Skills
• Basic understanding of automation systems (eg. PLCs, SCADA, HMI).
• Interest in programming or scripting (Python, C#, SQL).
• Exposure to networking or industrial communication protocols is a plus (eg. OPC UA, TCP/IPA, Profibus).
• Familiarity with data tools such as Power BI is helpful.
• Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills.

General office setting, typically the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work, usually at a computer terminal - with short breaks or lunch period. However, there may be some bending/stooping, reaching above shoulder level, walking; standing; carrying of light items such as papers, books, or packages of up to 25 pounds. Should be able to hear & speak clearly using phone / headset to communicate with customers; be able to navigate, view & enter information on the computer.
