Job description

Meta is seeking a Network Engineer to join our Global Network Operations team, responsible for the reliability, performance, and scalability of one of the world's largest and most complex production networks. In this role, you will drive operational excellence across Meta's global backbone, edge, and data center network infrastructure, responding to incidents, leading change management initiatives, and partnering with engineering teams to improve network health at hyperscale. You will apply deep expertise in routing, switching, and network protocols to detect, diagnose, and resolve issues that affect billions of users worldwide.
Network Engineer, Global Network Operations Responsibilities:
  • Lead incident response efforts for complex network events affecting Meta's global backbone, edge, and data center infrastructure, coordinating with cross-functional engineering teams and vendors to drive rapid root cause analysis and resolution
  • Identify and implement network changes to address security vulnerabilities, capacity constraints, and business continuity risks across production routing and switching infrastructure
  • Analyze network fault trends, traffic patterns, and infrastructure capacity data to proactively detect systemic issues and prioritize remediation efforts before they impact service reliability
  • Develop and refine operational processes, runbooks, and escalation procedures to improve efficiency and consistency across global network operations
  • Collaborate with network design and engineering teams to provide operational feedback that informs future network architecture decisions and infrastructure deployments
  • Partner with automation and tooling teams to identify opportunities for automated fault detection and remediation, and in some cases directly implement lightweight solutions to reduce manual operational toil
  • Maintain accurate and complete operational documentation, including network topology records, change logs, and incident postmortems, to support operational continuity and knowledge sharing
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with stakeholders across engineering, infrastructure, and leadership on incident status, operational metrics, and project progress
  • Contribute to team-level goal setting by analyzing operational datasets and translating findings into actionable roadmap items that improve network reliability and operational efficiency
  • Engage with managed service providers and third-party vendors to direct repair actions, validate performance against service level agreements, and translate operational issues into technical requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 6+ years of experience operating and troubleshooting large-scale production network infrastructure, including backbone, edge, or data center environments
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience with routing and switching protocols including BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, and spanning tree in a hyperscale or service provider context
  • Experience with network hardware platforms from vendors such as Juniper, Cisco, Arista, or equivalent, including configuration, troubleshooting, and performance analysis
  • Experience analyzing network telemetry, traffic flows, and fault data to identify root causes and drive systemic improvements across production infrastructure
  • Experience communicating technical findings and operational priorities in writing to both technical peers and non-technical stakeholders, including incident postmortems and project proposals

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
  • Familiarity with network automation frameworks and scripting languages such as Python used to streamline repetitive operational tasks or build lightweight tooling
  • Experience working within a global Network Operations Center environment, including managing escalations and measuring operational performance against defined service level agreements at scale
  • Demonstrated use of AI tools to redesign operational workflows, accelerate root cause analysis, or improve documentation quality with measurable efficiency outcomes
  • Experience with optical transport or WDM network infrastructure in a hyperscale data center or backbone context
