How much do computer network engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for computer network engineer in Dallas, TX is $108,325.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $88,400.00 and $132,600.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior computer network engineers with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and expertise in designing and managing large-scale networks can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or within large corporations. Such roles often require specialized skills in cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, and network architecture, along with leadership responsibilities.

What are the most common challenges Computer Network Engineers face when managing large-scale networks?

Computer Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring network security, minimizing downtime, and efficiently troubleshooting connectivity issues in large-scale environments. Managing complex configurations, keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies, and integrating new hardware or software can also be demanding. Effective collaboration with IT teams, clear documentation, and continuous learning are essential to successfully address these challenges and maintain robust network performance.

What does a computer network engineer do?

A computer network engineer designs, implements, and maintains computer networks such as local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets. They troubleshoot network issues, configure hardware and software, and ensure network security using tools like firewalls and VPNs. Certification such as Cisco's CCNA is often required, and they typically work in office environments with regular schedules.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior computer network engineers with extensive experience, advanced certifications (such as CCIE), and expertise in designing and managing large-scale networks can earn salaries of $300,000 or more annually. These roles often require working in high-demand industries, managing complex infrastructure, and sometimes include leadership responsibilities or consulting work.

What is the difference between Computer Network Engineer vs Network Administrator?

AspectComputer Network EngineerNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigns and plans network infrastructure, often in project-based rolesMaintains and manages existing networks, handles daily operations
Employer & Industry UsageTech firms, large corporations, consulting firmsMost organizations with IT infrastructure, including small to large businesses

While both roles involve networking skills, Computer Network Engineers focus on designing and implementing network solutions, whereas Network Administrators manage and maintain those networks on a daily basis. The roles often overlap, but their primary responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Will AI replace CCNA jobs?

AI is unlikely to fully replace Computer Network Engineers with CCNA certification, as the role requires complex problem-solving, network design, and troubleshooting skills that AI cannot fully replicate. Instead, AI tools are expected to augment their work, making tasks more efficient and allowing engineers to focus on more strategic aspects of network management. Staying current with certifications and developing skills in network automation and security can help professionals remain valuable in the evolving field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of network protocols, system architecture, and troubleshooting, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with networking tools, hardware, firewalls, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and resolving issues quickly. These competencies ensure reliable, secure network infrastructures that support organizational productivity and data integrity.
