Dept./School: Assigned Campus
Primary Purpose:
Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the music area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
Under the supervision of the Campus Principal, is responsible for teaching music education to pupils in grades K-5, and assists the staff of the school in the improvement and appreciation of music instruction.
Helps pupils grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of
planned music experiences which include singing, moving to music, playing of instruments and listening and performs other duties directly related to this job description.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or training for subject and level assigned Demonstrated competency in the music area assigned
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of music
Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
One year student teaching or approved internship
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
1. Teaches skills in music understanding/appreciation, harmony, explorations in music and choral music to elementary students.
2. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
3. Plans/executes a balanced music program and organizes class time so that preparation, rehearsal and
instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
4. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the music curriculum to the needs of each student.
5. Encourages students to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible.
6. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary that are
appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
7. Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.
8. Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
Student Growth and Development
9. Evaluates each student's musical growth, performance, and musical understanding.
10. Assesses each individual's contribution to the performance of the group.
11. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
12. Be a positive role model for students; support the mission of the school district.
Classroom Management and Organization
13. Selects appropriate music, books and instructional aids to enhance learning and requisitions musical instruments and instructional supplies as necessary.
14. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
15. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
16. Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
17. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
Communication
18. Daily contact with students, teachers and school staff.
19. Communicates with parents and school staff on individual student's progress.
20. Regular/occasional contact with parents, community members and outside agency personnel.
21. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
Professional Growth and Development
22. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
23. Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
24. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Other
25. Cooperation with Campus Principal and staff in providing musical programs for school assemblies, open house, parent meetings and seasonal programs.
