Job description

Position Summary:

Under direct supervision of the Lab Management Team, performs quality control and assists in patients testing when needed; operates and maintains point of care lab equipment (CLIA waived and moderate complexity testing); conducts problem resolution, supply inventories and record keeping; renders excellent and effective communication to laboratory internal and external customers.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Oversees the work activities and problem solving of the CPTs and MLTs at the Urgent Care laboratory
  • Assists in performing training/competency testing for Ambulatory Care personnel in the operation of waived and moderately complex point of care equipment
  • May assist in scheduling the CPTs and MLTs to match the demands of the daily workflow of the laboratory
  • May assist in managing to ensure technical competencies and skill improvement process of the lab team including training new hires
  • Monitor, operate and troubleshoot both waived and moderate complexity point of care instruments
  • Perform required Quality Control testing on all point of care testing instrument
  • Determines the acceptability of the quality control testing results prior to patient testing
  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving
  • Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents and test devices
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
  • May assist the Laboratory Manager or designee in implementing new/improved workflow and processes in continual approach including validation and verification on new testing platforms
  • Prepare for auditing and accreditations and ensures regulatory compliance of the laboratory
  • Assist with the processing of specimens and patient testing when needed
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Support in implementing and validating new testing platforms
  • Have knowledge and skills in specimen preparation, storage and disposal of specimen, revision of daily temperature and recording; according to laboratory SOPs
  • Perform records keeping of CLIA waived and moderate complexity testing according to laboratory SOPs
  • Demonstrate basic computer literacy to meet department needs and duties (i.e. records keeping, health record entries, results tracking, etc.)
  • Ability to multi task, flexible, ensures accuracy and completeness of work, adaptable to changes in department and business needs
  • Possess personal characteristics of professionalism, credible commitment to high standards with excellent communication skills; effectively and clearly communicate verbally and in writing with patients and other customers
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on the business needs

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to the established departmental policies and objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards
  • Maintain current continuing education and professional licensure
  • Attend and participate in meetings and additional duties as required

Job Requirements


Experience Required:

  • 5 yearsโ€™ experience as Medical Laboratory Technician in a reference lab or urgent care setting

Education Required:

  • Associate degree or 60 semester or equivalent quarter units in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science

Certifications Required:

  • Current California State (CDPH) Medical Laboratory Technician License
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers

Verbal and Written Skills Required to Perform the Job:

  • Must have excellent English speaking and writing skills
  • Very strong presentation skills required

Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job:

  • Familiarity and experience working with various laboratory instruments such as ISTAT; Piccolo; Chemistry Analyzer; Coulter or any CBC instruments; Urinalysis instruments, such as Clinitek or Seimens Urine analyzer; and/or Coagu-Check instruments
  • Proficient in medical terminology
  • Basic computer skills and literacy
  • Demonstrate ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate in working with others
  • Ability to work well in fast-paced, dynamic environments
  • Demonstrate respect for diversity
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Outstanding organizational, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills

Equipment Used:

  • Various Lab testing equipment and materials, computers, phones, copy machines and fax machines

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens subject to varying and unpredictable situations
  • Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens and patients
  • Frequent prolonged standing/walking
  • Occasionally subjected to irregular hours
  • Lifting 0-20 lbs.
  • Carrying 0-20 lbs.
  • Bending, kneeling, climbing, and pulling 0-10 lbs., repetitive use of hands, sample grasping, reaching body and hand twisting
  • Wearing protective personal equipment such as gloves, face shield, lab coats, goggles, etc.
  • Working around electrical workplace equipment (e.g. centrifuge)
