Job description

Position Summary:

The Technician I – Mortar Laboratory supports the testing and evaluation of mortar and related cementitious materials. This entry-level position involves sample preparation, performing standardized lab tests, recording data, and maintaining a clean, organized lab environment in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and test mortar samples in accordance with ASTM standards (e.g., ASTM C109, C305, etc.).
  • Perform physical and mechanical tests such as compressive strength, flow, consistency, and setting time.
  • Follow proper mixing, molding, and curing procedures for mortar cubes and other test specimens.
  • Accurately record test results and maintain detailed lab documentation.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, tools, and workspaces.
  • Calibrate and verify equipment as required.
  • Assist with receiving and logging materials for testing.
  • Comply with safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Support senior technicians and laboratory staff as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical coursework in construction materials or engineering is a plus.
  • 0–2 years of experience in a construction materials testing lab or related field.
  • Ability to follow technical procedures and standard test methods.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to work in a dusty and sometimes physically demanding lab environment.
