To thrive in Computer Integrated Manufacturing, you need a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, automation, and systems integration, often supported by a degree in engineering or industrial technology. Familiarity with PLCs, CAD/CAM software, robotics, and ERP systems, as well as certifications like Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing, is highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork skills help professionals excel in optimizing production workflows. These competencies are crucial for improving efficiency, reducing errors, and maintaining competitiveness in advanced manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Computer Integrated Manufacturing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) often encounter challenges such as integrating new automation technologies with existing legacy systems, ensuring data consistency across various platforms, and maintaining real-time communication between hardware and software. Addressing these issues typically requires close collaboration with IT, engineering, and production teams, as well as ongoing training to stay updated on the latest industry standards and technologies. Proactive problem-solving, effective project management, and strong communication skills are key for overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth manufacturing operations.

What is Computer Integrated Manufacturing?

Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is a method of manufacturing in which the entire production process is controlled by computer systems. CIM integrates various technologies such as computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), robotics, and automated material handling to streamline operations and improve efficiency. By connecting different manufacturing processes through a central computer system, companies can achieve greater precision, flexibility, and productivity. CIM is widely used in industries that require high levels of automation and quality control.

What is the difference between Computer Integrated Manufacturing vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectComputer Integrated ManufacturingManufacturing Engineer
Primary FocusIntegrating manufacturing processes through automation and software systemsDesigning, developing, and improving manufacturing processes and systems
Required SkillsAutomation, control systems, CAD/CAM, programmingProcess design, project management, technical problem-solving
Work EnvironmentFactories with automation and control systemsFactories, engineering offices, R&D labs
CertificationsPLC, automation, CAD/CAM certificationsPE license, Six Sigma, project management certifications

While both roles are involved in manufacturing, Computer Integrated Manufacturing focuses on integrating automation and software systems to streamline production. Manufacturing Engineers design and optimize manufacturing processes, often working alongside automation systems. Both roles require technical skills, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Job description

The Senior CAD Designer plays a critical role in driving innovative and technically sound designs that support the development of new and sustaining products. This role collaborates closely with cross-functional engineering teams to translate concepts into detailed CAD models and drawings, using industry best practices and a deep understanding of manufacturing processes and design intent.

This individual leads by example in creating intelligent manufacturable designs, mentoring team members, and supporting the global CAD infrastructure. The ideal candidate is a skilled designer, an excellent communicator, and a proactive problem solver who helps shorten development timelines, elevate product quality, and contribute to long-term company growth.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with engineers to design and develop both new and sustaining components and systems, using minimal viable product (MVP) principles to accelerate innovation and product development.
  • Translate design intent into detailed 3D models, assemblies, and engineering drawings using industry-standard CAD software, with minimal supervision.
  • Support the New Product Development (NPD) process by contributing to fast-paced concept-to-handoff cycles, ensuring design feasibility, manufacturability, and quality.
  • Develop component and system designs aligned with engineering best practices using various materials and manufacturing methods, including stamping, blanking, forming, fine blanking, injection and thermoset molding, die and investment casting, cold forming, extruding, and draw forming.
  • Perform detailed tolerance stack-up analysis and apply GD&T principles to ensure dimensional accuracy and compliance with functional and manufacturing requirements.
  • Work collaboratively across departments including Testing, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, and Finance to execute design projects efficiently and align deliverables with broader business goals.
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency of all design documentation, including CAD models, drawings, BOMs, and metadata within the PDM/PLM system.
  • Support the creation and procurement of prototype components, including part ordering and tracking for build readiness.
  • Resolve CAD-related issues and provide ongoing support and mentoring to junior designers; contribute to CAD training efforts and system optimization.
  • Participate in and lead design reviews, DFM/DFA evaluations, and other validation activities to incorporate stakeholder feedback and drive continuous improvement.
  • Maintain and contribute to the development of CAD standards, templates, fixture libraries, and automated tools to enhance design efficiency.
  • Provide global CAD support for modeling, drawing generation, and fixture design, ensuring consistency and integration across regional teams.
  • Proactively manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, meeting deadlines while maintaining high standards of design integrity and product performance.
  • Fully support and comply with all company programs, policies, and strategic objectives.
  • Perform other administrative duties in support of core responsibilities and departmental operations.

Skills & Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associate or Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on CAD design experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, or AutoCAD.
  • Advanced knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and design for manufacturability (DFM/DFA).
  • Demonstrated expertise in the use of engineering software, systems, and manual tools for part and assembly design.
  • Experience in designing with plastics, sheet metal, and other common manufacturing materials and processes.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing and assembly methodologies, design constraints, and production processes.
  • Familiar with PDM/PLM systems (e.g., Teamcenter, Windchill, ENOVIA, SolidWorks PDM) for managing CAD data and documentation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven ability to mentor junior designers, promote CAD best practices, and collaborate effectively across global, cross-functional teams.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, results-driven, and committed to delivering high-quality work on time.
