What is a computer engineer?

A computer engineer designs, researches, tests, and develops computer equipment and software such as circuit boards, chips, routers, and application programs. Computer engineers analyze complex equipment and systems to understand the best way to improve it. They create new types of information technology devices and use logic and reasoning to hone in on goals, test assumptions, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems. Engineers often work in teams and have to be able to communicate with other types of engineers, including non-technical team members. Computer engineers make sure that components fit together properly and function according to the latest software developments.

What kind of jobs do computer engineers have?

Computer engineers work in designing, developing, and testing computer hardware and software systems. They may be involved in areas such as embedded systems, network infrastructure, cybersecurity, and software development, often requiring knowledge of programming languages and engineering principles.

What are common challenges computer engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Computer engineers often collaborate with software developers, hardware designers, and project managers, which can present challenges in aligning technical requirements and communication styles. Ensuring that everyone has a clear understanding of system limitations and integration points is crucial, as miscommunication can lead to project delays or rework. Staying adaptable and proactively clarifying expectations helps computer engineers navigate these collaborative environments successfully.

Job description

Job Title: Electrical CAD Designer

Job Description

The Electrical CAD Designer supports manufacturing plant operations by creating, updating, and maintaining electrical one-line diagrams for the facility’s power distribution systems, primarily focused on 480V and below. This role ensures that all electrical documentation accurately reflects current plant conditions to support maintenance activities, engineering projects, safety programs, and regulatory compliance. All design and drafting work is performed in AutoCAD Electrical, with close collaboration across engineering and maintenance teams.

Responsibilities

  • Create new electrical one-line diagrams in AutoCAD Electrical for plant distribution systems, including utility service entrances, main switchgear, distribution panels, motor control centers (MCCs), and 480V/208V/120V transformers and feeders.
  • Recreate and modernize legacy or field-marked one-line diagrams into current AutoCAD Electrical standards, including symbol libraries and title blocks.
  • Verify one-line diagram accuracy against actual field conditions, breaker and fuse settings, equipment nameplates, and panel schedules through plant walkdowns.
  • Perform revision checks and apply redlines in AutoCAD Electrical following equipment changes, capital projects, or maintenance work orders.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of 480V distribution equipment, including switchgear, MCCs, transformers, panelboards, feeders, and branch circuits.
  • Build and maintain AutoCAD Electrical symbol libraries, blocks, and templates aligned with plant equipment standards.
  • Coordinate with plant electrical engineers and maintenance electricians to capture equipment additions, relocations, and decommissioning activities.
  • Support arc flash hazard analysis efforts by ensuring one-line diagrams reflect current equipment ratings and protective device settings.
  • Cross-reference one-line diagrams with panel schedules, load lists, and short-circuit and coordination studies to ensure consistency.
  • Manage drawing revision history and change control, including title block revisions, sheet set organization, and drawing logs, within AutoCAD Electrical and the plant’s document management system.
  • Ensure electrical documentation and designs comply with NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE standards, and internal plant electrical requirements.
  • Support capital projects by producing updated one-line diagrams for new equipment installations, production line expansions, and electrical infrastructure upgrades.
  • Participate in periodic electrical system audits to confirm that drawings and documentation accurately reflect as-built conditions.

Essential Skills

  • Associate’s degree or technical certification in CAD Design, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field, or equivalent manufacturing plant experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience creating and maintaining electrical one-line diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical tools, including symbol libraries, circuit builder, schematic and one-line workflows, title block and sheet set management, and drawing revision tracking.
  • Hands-on familiarity with 480V distribution equipment such as switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), transformers, panelboards, and feeder and branch circuits.
  • Working knowledge of NEC and NFPA 70E as applied to industrial power distribution.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies during field verification and revision checks.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment nameplates, breaker and relay settings, and panel schedules.
  • Experience using document and revision control systems to manage engineering drawings and records.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • AutoCAD Electrical certification or formal training in AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Experience supporting arc flash studies or coordination studies using tools such as SKM or ETAP in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with plant maintenance and CMMS systems and how they interface with electrical documentation.
  • Experience with three-phase motor circuits, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and MCC bucket layouts.
  • Working alongside plant electricians or maintenance teams around live equipment, with a strong understanding of safe work practices (without necessarily performing energized work).
  • Exposure to manufacturing capital project processes, including management of change (MOC) and equipment cutovers.

Work Environment

This position is fully onsite in the St. Peters area and involves working in active manufacturing plant environments. The role requires regular time in production facilities, including walking the plant floor to verify electrical equipment and documentation. Work is primarily performed using AutoCAD Electrical and related document management systems, with frequent interaction with electrical engineers, maintenance electricians, and project teams. The environment includes standard industrial power distribution equipment such as switchgear, MCCs, transformers, panelboards, and 480V systems. The role may involve splitting time between multiple local manufacturing sites, requiring flexibility and comfort working in different plant settings. Appropriate industrial attire and adherence to all safety policies and procedures are expected.
