Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Electrical/Computer Engineer to join the Ocean Systems Lab within the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department. Join our group designing underwater communications systems for robotic applications. Job Description
This is an entry- to early-career position within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers focused on underwater optical communications and marine robotics. The role offers hands-on experience in the design, fabrication, and testing of advanced underwater communication systems.
In the initial phase, the candidate will develop familiarity with core technologies and contribute to system assembly, integration, and testing. As experience grows, the candidate will take on increasing responsibility in the development of new communication techniques and applications for underwater platforms.
The position requires creativity, initiative, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. A strong foundation in electrical engineering principles is expected, demonstrated through a relevant degree or equivalent professional experience.
This position may be filled at the Engineer I or Engineer II level, depending on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience.
Essential Functions & Duties
  • Embedded systems development in C++ or Python

  • Ability to read schematics and use oscilloscopes for signal tracing and troubleshooting

  • Wiring, cabling and other fields.

  • Willing and able to support at-sea and field deployments

Salary Range:
- Engineer I: $70,963 - $91,796
- Engineer II: $89,408 - $116,127
The salary range provided for this position reflects the expected minimum and maximum base pay for new hires. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as internal equity and market conditions. In addition to base salary, eligible employees also receive a comprehensive benefits package.
Physical Requirements
  • Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift less than 25-50lbs independently, 3 times per day; carry 25-50lbs, 4 times per day.
  • Visual abilities to include peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors.
  • Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively in loud areas (pier/dock, warehouse).
  • Willngness and ability for Sea Duty
