What Is a Computer Engineer?

A computer engineer designs, researches, tests, and develops computer equipment and software such as circuit boards, chips, routers, and application programs. Computer engineers analyze complex equipment and systems to understand the best way to improve it. They create new types of information technology devices and use logic and reasoning to hone in on goals, test assumptions, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems. Engineers often work in teams and have to be able to communicate with other types of engineers, including non-technical team members. Computer engineers make sure that components fit together properly and function according to the latest software developments.

What are computer engineers?

Computer engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer hardware and software systems. They work at the intersection of electrical engineering and computer science, focusing on how computer systems function and how they can be improved. Their roles can involve creating microprocessors, designing circuit boards, developing embedded systems, and optimizing software for hardware performance. Computer engineers play a crucial role in advancing technology across industries, from consumer electronics to aerospace and healthcare.

What are common challenges computer engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Computer engineers often collaborate with software developers, hardware designers, and project managers, which can present challenges in aligning technical requirements and communication styles. Ensuring that everyone has a clear understanding of system limitations and integration points is crucial, as miscommunication can lead to project delays or rework. Staying adaptable and proactively clarifying expectations helps computer engineers navigate these collaborative environments successfully.

Design the Future of Utility Systems

We’re seeking a detail-oriented Electrical CAD Designer to join our Trussville, Alabama team. In this role, you’ll support electrical design efforts across both our electric utility and water/wastewater utility teams, producing detailed CAD drawings and control panel designs that form the backbone of vital infrastructure throughout the Southeastern United States.

You’ll work directly with engineers and project managers to develop high-quality drawing packages used in the design, construction, and commissioning of substation and control panel systems. This is an excellent opportunity for a designer who enjoys hands-on, technical design work and wants to see their projects make a real impact on essential services across communities.

What You’ll Do

  • Create and modify electrical design packages for control and RTU panels serving electric, water, and wastewater utility customers.
  • Develop detailed one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, and panel layouts.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and sometimes MicroStation to produce accurate, industry-standard drawing sets.
  • Work closely with engineers to implement design changes and ensure compliance with project and client standards.
  • Coordinate documentation updates, redlines, and as-built revisions.
  • Support integration of control wiring, instrumentation, and communication systems across multiple utility disciplines.
  • Maintain drawing organization, file management, and revision control throughout project lifecycles.
  • Uphold a high standard of drafting accuracy and attention to detail.

What You Bring

  • Experience: 3–10 years of CAD design experience in the power or utility industries (experience in water/wastewater systems a plus).
  • Software Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and familiarity with MicroStation with the aptitude to become proficient.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Understanding of electrical and control panel design principles.
    • Ability to interpret engineering sketches and specifications into professional CAD drawings.
    • Familiarity with substation, RTU, PLC, or instrumentation wiring practices.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Extremely detail-oriented with strong organizational abilities.
    • Flexible and collaborative—able to work across multiple teams and utility customers.
    • Excellent communication and commitment to delivering quality work.

Why You’ll Love Working in Trussville
