Job Description:
The Prototype Machinist is an entry-level position responsible for learning and developing machining skills while assisting in the fabrication of prototype components, fixtures, gauges, tooling, and other machine parts. Under the guidance of experienced machinists and prototype shop personnel, the machinist will gain hands-on experience operating machine shop equipment, interpreting engineering drawings, performing basic machining operations, and supporting prototype development activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Learn and follow all company safety policies, procedures, and shop practices.
Assist in the setup and operation of manual and CNC machine tools under supervision.
Support the fabrication of prototype parts, fixtures, gauges, tooling, and related components from drawings, sketches, CAD models, and verbal instructions.
Perform basic machining tasks including drilling, milling, turning, sawing, tapping, and other operations as assigned.
Complete secondary operations such as deburring, sanding, polishing, assembly, and part finishing.
Learn to use precision measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges, and other inspection tools.
Assist with preventive maintenance, cleaning, lubrication, and upkeep of prototype shop equipment.
Support Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams on prototype and development projects.
Learn to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and basic GD&T requirements.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Participate in training and skill development activities to increase machining knowledge and technical capabilities.
Perform other duties assigned to support prototype shop objectives.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods while operating machinery and performing shop tasks.
Ability to work in a machine shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, and manufacturing equipment.
Ability to safely use hand tools, measuring equipment, and shop machinery.
Ability to lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to use a personal computer and related software applications.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Enrollment in or completion of a technical program in Machine Tool Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Mechatronics, or a related field preferred.
Previous coursework, vocational training, internships, co-op experience, or hands-on machining experience is a plus but not required.
Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in machining, manufacturing, and prototype development.
Ability to learn machining fundamentals, blueprint reading, measurement techniques, and shop practices.
Strong mathematical skills and problem-solving ability.
Ability to follow instructions and accept coaching from experienced team members.
Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Strong work ethic, dependability, punctuality, and attendance.
Desire to learn new skills and grow within the machining profession.
Ability to work effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and cross-functional teams.
Commitment to following all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
