Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, assisting with tasks such as software development, hardware design, testing, and troubleshooting. The internship provides hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to real-world projects, helping interns develop technical skills and industry knowledge. It also allows interns to network with professionals and can often lead to full-time employment after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a computer engineer intern expect during their internship?

As a Computer Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects that may involve software development, hardware testing, or assisting with system integration tasks. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced engineers, participate in team meetings, and contribute to debugging or documentation efforts. The work environment is typically fast-paced and supportive, offering plenty of opportunities to learn new technologies and engineering best practices. Interns are also encouraged to ask questions and seek mentorship, which helps in building both technical and professional skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineer Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of computer architecture, programming languages such as C/C++ or Python, and coursework toward a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with development environments, version control systems like Git, and basic hardware or software debugging tools is often required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a willingness to learn quickly are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, collaborate with team members, and rapidly acquire new technical knowledge essential for professional growth.

Job description

ENTRY-LEVEL RELIABILITY ENGINEER

Location: Columbia, South Carolina

Industry: Steel Manufacturing

Employment Type: Full-Time

We are seeking an Entry-Level Reliability Engineer to support equipment reliability and maintenance improvement efforts at a Columbia, South Carolina facility.

This opportunity is designed for a recent engineering graduate who wants to begin their career in a hands-on manufacturing environment. You will work alongside experienced reliability engineers, maintenance technicians, operations personnel and skilled trades to identify equipment problems, investigate failures and improve the performance of critical production assets.

You do not need previous steel-industry experience. The ideal candidate has a strong mechanical or electrical foundation, enjoys troubleshooting and is comfortable spending time on the plant floor.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Support troubleshooting and root-cause investigations for mechanical and electrical equipment failures

  • Work directly with maintenance technicians and operations personnel to understand recurring equipment issues

  • Collect and analyze equipment, downtime and maintenance data

  • Help identify bad actors and recommend corrective actions

  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance programs

  • Assist with equipment inspections, condition monitoring and failure documentation

  • Help improve maintenance procedures, job plans and equipment records

  • Track reliability projects and measure whether improvements produce results

  • Participate in planned outages, equipment repairs and improvement projects

  • Learn the operation of industrial equipment such as motors, gearboxes, bearings, conveyors, hydraulic systems and rotating equipment

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a related engineering discipline

  • Strong interest in equipment reliability, maintenance, manufacturing or industrial operations

  • Basic understanding of mechanical or electrical systems

  • Ability to analyze problems and communicate findings clearly

  • Willingness to work in an active steel-manufacturing environment

  • Comfortable working both in an office and on the plant floor

  • Strong initiative and willingness to learn from experienced engineers and tradespeople

PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • Engineering internship, co-op, senior design or manufacturing project experience

  • Exposure to rotating equipment, motors, bearings, gearboxes, hydraulics or industrial controls

  • Familiarity with root-cause analysis, preventive maintenance or condition monitoring

  • Experience using Excel, CMMS software, CAD or engineering-analysis tools

  • Hands-on mechanical, electrical, automotive, fabrication or equipment experience

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

During your first several months, you will learn the facility, equipment and maintenance processes while supporting experienced team members. As you develop, you will begin leading smaller failure investigations, identifying recurring equipment issues and recommending improvements that reduce downtime and increase equipment availability.

This is an opportunity to build a long-term engineering career while gaining hands-on experience with large-scale industrial equipment and real production challenges.

You should be proficient in:

  • Root Cause Analysis
