What is a computer engineer internship?

A Computer Engineer Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in computer engineering. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, assisting with tasks such as software development, hardware design, testing, and troubleshooting. The internship provides hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to real-world projects, helping interns develop technical skills and industry knowledge. It also allows interns to network with professionals and can often lead to full-time employment after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a computer engineer intern expect during their internship?

As a Computer Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects that may involve software development, hardware testing, or assisting with system integration tasks. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced engineers, participate in team meetings, and contribute to debugging or documentation efforts. The work environment is typically fast-paced and supportive, offering plenty of opportunities to learn new technologies and engineering best practices. Interns are also encouraged to ask questions and seek mentorship, which helps in building both technical and professional skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineer Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of computer architecture, programming languages such as C/C++ or Python, and coursework toward a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with development environments, version control systems like Git, and basic hardware or software debugging tools is often required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a willingness to learn quickly are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, collaborate with team members, and rapidly acquire new technical knowledge essential for professional growth.

Manufacturing Engineer (Product Support)

Job description

About American Chillers

American Chillers designs and manufactures industrial process chillers and cooling systems for a growing range of demanding applications — pool & spa, industrial processes, breweries, medical systems (MRI/LINAC), battery energy storage (BESS), data centers, and more. We build custom, engineered-to-order equipment, which means an engineer here works across the business — not one repetitive corner of an assembly line.

About the Role

We're hiring a Manufacturing Engineer (Product Support) to be the technical backbone behind our chillers once they leave the floor — the person our customers and field techs call when they need help, who owns replacement‑parts sales, and who keeps the documentation and manufacturing process behind every unit sharp.

This is a broad, hands‑on role, not a narrow seat. You'll support customers and field techs through start‑up, troubleshooting, and warranty questions; own replacement‑ and spare‑parts sales; produce the documentation that ships with every unit (O&M manuals, electrical schematics, drawings); and support the manufacturing process in our Odoo ERP (BOMs, routings, work centers, work instructions), working with production to keep the build clean and well‑documented.

If you like being the person who knows how the machine goes together and why it's acting up in the field, this is the job.

This is a great fit for an early‑career engineer. You don't need years of experience — you need an engineering foundation, strong computer and technical skills, and the drive to learn our product inside and out. You'll be mentored by the engineering & technical team and grow into the go‑to technical resource for our customers and our floor.

What we're Looking for
  • An engineering foundation — a degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering (or a related technical field), or equivalent hands‑on technical experience.
  • Strong computer and software skills — comfortable in CAD, spreadsheets, and business software, and quick to pick up an ERP system. You're the person who's good with the computer, not fighting it.
  • Mechanical and electrical literacy — you can read assembly drawings, P&IDs, and electrical schematics, and you understand how a machine's electrical and mechanical sides fit together (or have a strong drive to learn).
  • Customer‑facing confidence — willing to pick up the phone, talk a technician through a problem, and be a calm, clear technical voice on the other end.
  • Drive and ownership — this is a wide role with a lot of surface area. We need someone who attacks it and wants to grow, not someone who waits for a work order.
  • On‑site in the Columbia, SC area (this is not a remote role).
Preferred / a plus
  • Internship, co‑op, or early work experience in manufacturing, HVAC/R, or industrial equipment.
  • HVAC/R or refrigeration exposure — refrigeration circuits, compressors, condensers, evaporators, brazing, charging, controls. A real advantage, but we'll teach the chiller side.
  • Experience with an ERP/MRP system (Odoo, SAP, Epicor, NetSuite, Fishbowl, Infor, or similar) — BOM and routings especially. We'll teach our ERP system.
  • Familiarity with CAD (SOLIDWORKS, AutoCAD, Inventor) and/or electrical schematic tools.
  • Any technical documentation, customer‑support, or parts/aftermarket experience.
Benefits
  • Paid Time Off
  • Paid Holidays
  • Retirement plan (401k) with 4% matching contribution
  • On‑site team in Columbia, SC.
