JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
We are searching for an undergraduate student to join our Cybersecurity Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. Information Technology Services provides ARL's administrative and research computing environments and capabilities, delivering secure, responsive, efficient, effective, and compliant IT services and operations to meet the demanding needs of ARL's leading edge research.
This position will assist our unclassified cybersecurity assurance team in compliance and operations. The student will be responsible for all tier 1 compliance, audit, and continuous monitoring tasks. Additionally, they will get the opportunity to assist senior level analysts on larger scale projects focused on automation and threat identification.
Typical duties include:
  • Compliance enforcement
  • SIEM configuration and security administration
  • Vulnerability Management
  • Audit and security checks
  • Automation and process improvement
  • Compliance documentation updates
  • Technical writing in policy, process, and procedures
  • Hardware and Software reviews

Students studying within the field of Information and Cyber Security, Information Science and Technology, or computer science/engineering are encouraged to apply.
Experience with the following is preferred:
  • Familiarity with defensive cyber tools such as Firewalls, SIEM, XDR/EDR, CASB, FIM, IDS/IPS
  • Networking fundamentals
  • System administration and troubleshooting
  • Scripting (bash, python, etc)
  • Compliance or auditing
  • NIST documentation (eg. 800-171, 800-53)
  • STIG

The successful candidate will work up to 20 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters and 40 hours/week over the summer. This is a paid internship opportunity located at ARL in State College, PA; relocation and housing are not provided.
Candidate selected may be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre- employment drug screen.
