Shimmick is actively seeking a highly motivated Field Engineer Intern for employment on our project in Austin, TX. Expected start is May or June 2026 with an end date in August or September pending the academic schedules.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing assignments that require the application of standard techniques, procedures and criteria’s to carry out engineering tasks. Assignments are designed to further develop judgment and understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
  • Exercising judgment limited to developing details of work in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives.
  • Preparing engineering related calculations and developing drawings and visual aids.
  • Assisting with field inspections to evaluate the work performed and materials used.
  • Assisting with construction administration and documentation of deficiencies and deviations from plans.
  • Working under supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member.
  • Researching and compiling project information for reporting, marketing, and funding requests.
  • Creating and maintaining centralized files for project records (including digital).
  • Coordinating logistics and meetings for project managers.
  • Attending and taking minutes for the development team as requested.
  • Helping in the preparation of reports, including monthly development reports.
  • Assisting with community outreach duties as needed.
  • Attending neighborhood, community, and project meetings.
  • Undertaking tasks as may be assigned by project managers.
  • Having a clear understanding of the budget and assist in the creation of and adherence to project and development budgets.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university program pursing a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or related field with the intent to continue enrollment after an internship.
  • Must have completed at least 1 year of study.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Capable of using spreadsheet, word processing and standard office software.
  • Basic knowledge of industry standard computer software for the position (examples include software such as CADD, HCS, AutoCAD, MicroStation, GIS, Hydrologic/Hydraulic models).
  • Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • strong problem-solving skills and consistent attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage changing deadlines and work well under pressure for multiple team leaders.
  • Work independently and effectively to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Highly organized with excellent time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.

  • The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $30.00 per hour depending on experience and/or education.
  • A Housing Stipend is available to those who qualify.
