This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Associate Geotechnical Engineer to join our Anchorage, AK team.  Be involved in projects with our Ground Engineering & Materials, Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges. Take part in providing local geotechnical engineering for the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector.
The focus of the work includes conducting geotechnical engineering analysis, leading site characterization plans, and leading project delivery teams. The successful candidate will work closely with our Alaska operations that specializes in fundamental geotechnical engineering applications, cold regions related geotechnical engineering aspects, and rock mechanics. Our team thrives on developing client solutions for northern challenges.

  • Leading and managing projects as an experienced team player
  • Defining site characterizations and guiding co-workers through geotechnical analyses for soil stability and foundation design solutions
  • Preparing and reviewing technical reports
  • Preparing co-workers for documenting and inspecting ground construction activity
  • Developing business relationships and communicating with clients
  • Building on project management skills appropriate to your level and background
  • Demonstrating safety leadership and comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures
  • Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects
  • Provide guidance and training to entry-level geotechnical engineers
  • Remain current in latest geotechnical engineering techniques and practices
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant post-education work experience related to geotechnical engineering and foundation solution development.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Undertaking assignments that may involve travel and periods of time away from home office.
  • Comfortable working in remote settings.
  • Understanding of computer-based deep foundation axial and lateral capacity software.
  • Understanding of computer-based slope stability software.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Ability to assertively direct others in the field such as subcontractors, drillers, and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Willing to travel up to 20%.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Engineering. 
  • Professional Engineer registration in Alaska or the ability to obtain within 18 months of employment. 
  • Experience with application of foundation capacity analysis in cold regions and permafrost ground conditions.
