What is a computer assistant?

A computer assistant uses their technical and communication skills to help people troubleshoot problems with their computers. Sometimes referred to as technical support or customer support staff, computer assistants know about computers and the software they run. Their primary job duties include listening to customers describe the problems they are having and then walking them through a series of steps to get any issues resolved. Depending on the company you work for, you may also assist employees with their computer setups and help develop training guides. Some computer assistants work in call centers while others communicate exclusively through online chat or email. The minimum educational qualifications for this career include a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate, although some employers may prefer you to have an associate degree in computer science and previous experience in a similar role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Assistant, you need strong knowledge of computer hardware, software applications, troubleshooting techniques, and typically at least an associate degree in a related field. Familiarity with operating systems, office productivity software, basic networking, and help desk ticketing systems is commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and patience are valuable soft skills for this position. These skills ensure efficient technical support, minimize downtime, and foster a productive work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by computer assistants in supporting end-users, and how can they effectively address them?

Computer Assistants often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting diverse hardware and software issues, managing multiple support requests simultaneously, and explaining technical concepts to users with varying levels of computer literacy. To address these challenges effectively, strong organizational and communication skills are essential. Building a knowledge base of common solutions, prioritizing tickets based on urgency, and maintaining patience and empathy with users can greatly enhance the support experience and lead to improved outcomes.

Job description

We are currently seeking resumes from qualified, responsible, self-sufficient, energetic CAD/BIM Support Technicians for our Sacramento, California office. The ideal candidate will be motivated to develop and build their personal knowledge and skills to assist with the growth and success of the office. We offer a friendly, professional atmosphere with excellent benefits and a salary commensurate with experience.

Job Description:

This position requires a CAD/BIM production support professional to provide technical drafting, model, and document-control support for major linear infrastructure design services projects. The ideal candidate will have practical experience in Bentley-based infrastructure delivery, ProjectWise workflows, CAD standards compliance, drawing production support, reference-file management, and multidisciplinary coordination.

ProjectWise should be treated as a core competency for this role. The position is expected to support controlled production workflows, not only basic file upload or download activities.

The role also assists with the oversight, configuration, update, and maintenance of the Bentley ProjectWise ecosystem, managed workspaces, and integrated design platforms and tools. This includes helping ensure seamless data workflows, cross-platform compatibility, and compliance with industry and client standards across federal, municipal, state, and private engineering projects.

This position supports the Digital, CAD, and discipline production teams by helping maintain consistent DGN and DWG production workflows, standards compliance, and deliverable quality across rail systems, civil, drainage, utilities, corridor structures, ducting, and other linear infrastructure scopes. The role includes a combination of production support, standards enforcement, user training, ProjectWise administration support, and pre-submittal QA/QC in accordance with project-specific CAD, BIM, plans-preparation, CDE, and ProjectWise requirements.

Duties:

  • Support DGN and DWG drawing and model production using MicroStation, OpenRoads/OpenRail, Civil 3D/AutoCAD, and related Bentley CONNECT and Autodesk tools.
  • Support Civil 3D/AutoCAD-based DWG production where required by discipline workflows, including DWG references, drawing deliverables, and coordination with the broader Bentley/ProjectWise production environment.
  • Assist with the configuration, update, management, and support of Bentley ProjectWise environments, including complex, multi-client managed workspaces for architectural, civil, and linear infrastructure project teams.
  • Assist discipline teams with ProjectWise workflows, file states, version control, metadata, references, nesting files, and deliverable packaging.
  • Provide hands-on ProjectWise production support, including check-in/check-out practices, document states, versioning, metadata completion, reference-file management, folder structure navigation, saved searches, and transmittal readiness.
  • Troubleshoot ProjectWise-related issues affecting DGN and DWG production, including managed workspace behavior, broken references, file locking, rendition or publishing issues, and cross-discipline deliverable packaging.
  • Support the implementation and adoption of Bentley Infrastructure Cloud and iTwin environments where required by project or client delivery workflows.
  • Help ensure practical interoperability between ProjectWise and Autodesk tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Revit, including support for DWG-based discipline workflows within a controlled ProjectWise/CDE environment.
  • Assist with the development, testing, and optimization of automated routines using ProjectWise PowerShell and Google Common Expression Language (CEL), as implemented in ProjectWise, where appropriate.
  • Review CAD files for compliance with project naming conventions, seed files, levels, symbology, line styles, drawing descriptions, and reference-file structure.
  • Support preparation and review of sheet files, master files, nesting files, border files, and drawing deliverables in accordance with the applicable client CAD Manual and Plans Preparation Manual.
  • Provide day-to-day production support to engineering teams, including troubleshooting references, broken links, workspace configuration issues, and publishing/rendition issues.
  • Act as a standards-control and training support resource, helping users follow approved CAD, ProjectWise, BIM, and CDE workflows consistently.
  • Support user guidance and light training for ProjectWise workflows so that discipline teams understand the correct process for working in WIP, sharing files, publishing deliverables, managing references, completing metadata, and maintaining traceability.
  • Assist with the creation, update, and organization of configuration guides, workflow instructions, training materials, and best-practice manuals related to ProjectWise, CAD standards, and digital production workflows.
  • Collaborate with digital practice leaders, document control, and project controls teams to help integrate document management, design review, and submittal workflows with internal and external EDMS/CDE requirements as needed.
  • Assist with pre-submittal QA/QC checks for drawings, CAD files, metadata, and model-to-drawing consistency.
  • Coordinate with the BIM Manager, CAD Manager, Information Manager, and discipline leads to track production issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of client, Bentley, Autodesk, and project-specific drafting, model management, information management, and document-control procedures.

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):

  • Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Technical degree or coursework in CAD, civil engineering, architecture, rail systems, information management, or a related infrastructure discipline is preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of related CAD production or CAD support experience in civil, transportation, rail, or large infrastructure projects.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on Bentley ProjectWise support, administration support, or information management experience within AEC or civil engineering markets is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with Bentley MicroStation and Bentley infrastructure workflows. Experience with OpenRoads Designer or OpenRail Designer is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working in ProjectWise, including document workflows, references, metadata, version control, and controlled production environments.
  • ProjectWise experience should include practical knowledge of complex CDE environments, document workflows, metadata governance, access or permissions coordination, version control, references, managed workspaces, saved searches, and issue escalation with information management or CAD management teams.
  • Strong understanding of DGN and DWG file organization, levels/layers, symbology, seed files/templates, reference files, sheet production, and CAD standards compliance.
  • Strong understanding of 3D modeling, BIM data management, and digital document preparation standards, with the ability to apply those standards to discipline production workflows.
  • Familiarity with civil discipline design workflows and software methodologies, including how design teams produce, reference, share, review, and publish controlled model and drawing deliverables.
  • Ability to support and guide production teams, communicate standards clearly, and help enforce project workflows in a constructive and consistent manner.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to coordinate with CAD, BIM, engineering, information management, and document-control teams.
  • Experience with Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Navisworks, iTwin, Bentley Infrastructure Cloud, ProjectWise PowerShell, Google Common Expression Language (CEL), or Blender (Bonsai) is a plus.
