Job description

Position Title: Mainframe Computer Operator

Work Location: Washington, DC

Shift Options:

Shift 1: 7:00 AM-3:30 PM

Shift 2: 3:00 PM-11:30 PM

Position Summary:

  • The Mainframe Computer Operator will provide onsite operational support for the mainframe data center, supporting high-volume printing, mainframe job processing, report distribution, and Production Control operations.
  • The position requires hands-on experience operating and maintaining high-speed laser printers, impact printers, and burster equipment within a mainframe data center environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and monitor high-speed laser printers, impact printers, and bursters within a mainframe data center.
  • Set up printers based on instructions received from mainframe computer consoles.
  • Load and replenish paper, toner, developer, and other required printing media.
  • Remove, organize, and prepare completed print jobs for customer distribution.
  • Process and manage report distribution accurately and efficiently.
  • Unload boxes of paper and forms required for production printing.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized printer operating area.
  • Remove empty printer boxes, toner containers, and loose paper from the work area.
  • Communicate with mainframe operating-system personnel and printer maintenance contractors when system or printer malfunctions occur.
  • Support Production Control personnel with operational activities.
  • Submit, schedule, monitor, and track jobs using JCL within TSO/ISPF.
  • Monitor job execution and assist with troubleshooting operational issues.
  • Track scheduled activities and ensure timely completion of assigned print and processing tasks.
  • Notify the appropriate GPO personnel when recycling/baling bins are full.
  • Maintain accurate handling and tracking of scheduled tasks and completed reports.
  • Perform other operational duties necessary to maintain uninterrupted mainframe printing and processing operations.

Required Experience:

  • In-depth hands-on experience operating and maintaining high-speed laser printers, impact printers, and burster equipment in a mainframe data center environment.
  • Experience supporting mainframe printing and production-processing operations.
  • Working knowledge of TSO/ISPF and JCL for submitting, scheduling, monitoring, and tracking mainframe jobs.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot or appropriately escalate printer and mainframe operational issues.
  • Ability to accurately process print jobs, reports, and scheduled production activities.
  • Ability to work effectively in an operational data center environment and coordinate with Production Control and maintenance personnel.
  • Important: The solicitation does not specify a particular degree, certification, number of years of experience, citizenship requirement, or security clearance for the operators.
