Job description

Reports to the Pharmacy Manager. Under the clinical supervision of a licensed pharmacist and in accordance with departmental policies, procedures and legal and regulatory requirements, provides prescriptions for patients in a retail pharmacy setting. Maintains inventory to meet customer demand, minimize costs and maximize profitability. Commitment to provide excellent customer service experience.

Dispensing/Profile Review

  • Receives prescriptions from patients, obtains complete information from the patient or family, and enters information into Pharmacy Information System computer.
  • Fills patient prescriptions with correct medication affixing cautionary statements and explanation labels as needed, utilizing the double check system 100% of the time.
  • Ensures appropriate patient teaching sheets and medication guides are attached to prescriptions.
  • Ensures pharmacist checks each prescription 100% of the time before distribution.
  • Calls insurance companies to facilitate successful prescription claim processing and prior authorization requests.
  • Utilizes the IVR system to maximize workflow efficiencies.
  • Works within standard work to ensure safe and efficient workflow; uses barcode scanning technology capabilities within the Pharmacy Information System to ensure the highest levels of patient safety.
  • Completes controlled substance C-II counts and maintains accurate logs per department policy complying with state and federal regulations.
  • Appropriately triages patient or customer drug information questions to the pharmacist per Board regulations.
  • Processes individual patient refill requests sent by email, phone, IVR system or computer.
  • Assist identified patients by referral to the Medication Assistance Program or by identifying manufacturer's coupon programs that may be used.
  • Follows processes for filling prescriptions to meet all federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to dispensing of drugs and controlled substances.
  • Audits prescriptions waiting to be picked up by patients and return to stock any that have not been picked up after 14 days, processing the return in the Pharmacy Information System computer reversing any insurance claim transmissions Perform duties as Inpatient Pharmacy Technician, as assigned.

Inventory/Accounting/Billing

  • Checks supplies and medications for outdated items monthly.
  • Balances cash drawer daily.
  • Responsible for making cash deposits and verification of previous days cash deposit with cashier daily.
  • Runs Daily Sales Analysis Reports for Finance Department and assists with Monthly Finance Reports, as needed.
  • Completes the ordering of quality inventory to meet customer demand, minimize costs and maximize profitability. Maintains efficient, cost-effective inventory par levels of office supplies.
  • Runs McKesson order analysis report daily to ensure compliance with contract pricing.
  • Receives medications and supplies from wholesalers daily, checking against the invoice to ensure all items are received.
  • Processes returnable goods for credit as needed.
  • Changes wholesaler inventory labels on shelf to ensure proper items are ordered.
  • Rotate stock and dispose of outdated supplies according to guidelines.
  • Assist in completion of department inventory and bi-enniel controlled substance inventory.
  • Completes HIPAA Disclosure Log monthly.
  • Completes billing of accounts.
  • Completes reconciliation of third-party billing and prepares monthly third-party reconciliation reports.
  • Provides contractual allowance worksheets to Finance Department monthly.
  • Utilizes consistent, approved pricing schedules when billing prescriptions.
  • Assist with monitoring Med-Asset Contract Pricing Verification Report, contacting McKesson and/or Med-Asset regarding potential contract price discrepancies.
  • Manages invoice coding and processing in the P2P electronic system.
  • Ensures pharmacy compliance with the Drug Supply Chain Security Act regulations.

Customer Service

  • Politely answers and screens all phone calls (including name and credentials) so that patients have an excellent customer experience and takes proper action relaying messages to pharmacist as needed.
  • Demonstrates a high level of customer service.
  • Triages customer phone calls and window visits so efficient utilization of pharmacist workflow is maintained.
  • Works cooperatively with other hospital departments and physician offices to provide requested medications and supplies (HR Advocacy program, special needs, medics, etc.).

Education and Experience

The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Must be a minimum of 17 years of age. Indiana Pharmacy Technician License is required, National Technician Certification is preferred. Previous work in a pharmacy, either hospital or retail, is required. The Candidate must successfully pass the National Pharmacy Technician Certification exam within six months of obtaining position. Failure to pass the National Pharmacy Technician Certification exam after 3 attempts (the maximum allowed by PTCB) will result in termination from this position.
