What is a computer aided design intern?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern is a student or entry-level professional who assists engineering or architectural teams by creating, modifying, and managing technical drawings and models using CAD software. Their main responsibilities often include supporting design projects, updating existing drawings, and learning industry standards. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience with design tools and processes, helping prepare interns for full-time roles in engineering, architecture, or related fields.

What do computer aided design interns do?

As a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that may include creating and modifying 2D or 3D models, preparing technical drawings for engineering or architectural teams, and assisting with design revisions based on feedback. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced designers and engineers, gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard CAD software. The work environment is typically fast-paced and supportive, with opportunities to contribute to real-world projects, participate in team meetings, and learn about the project lifecycle from concept through production.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a computer aided design intern?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering or architectural principles, attention to detail, and coursework or experience in CAD software. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit, and sometimes knowledge of 3D modeling or technical drawing standards, is typically required. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork abilities help you collaborate effectively and adapt in a professional environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing accurate designs, supporting project goals, and growing professionally within a technical team.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Intern vs CAD Technician?

Job description

The Electrical Construction Designer supports the planning, design, coordination, and execution of electrical construction projects within commercial and industrial facilities. This role requires advanced capabilities in both BIM modeling and CAD shop drawing development. The Designer will produce constructible design deliverables, support coordination efforts with other disciplines, and provide accurate quantity takeoffs for estimating and project control.
Design & Modeling
  • Conduct design reviews of electrical drawings, specifications, and submittals.
  • Develop and maintain BIM models at appropriate LOD (300-400) for coordination and constructability.
  • Create detailed CAD shop drawings and 2D documentation in alignment with BIM data.
  • Convert design files between BIM ↔ CAD platforms while ensuring data integrity.
  • Perform redlines and design updates reflecting RFIs, field changes, and as-built conditions.
  • Build and maintain BIM content libraries, templates, shared parameters, and standardized naming/organization systems.
  • Develop CAD-based shop drawings and details for installation, routing, and equipment layouts
  • Perform quantity takeoffs using CAD drawings when BIM models are not available
  • Review vendor drawings (equipment layouts, MCC/Switchgear shop prints) to ensure compatibility with design and installation requirements

BIM Execution & Quality Control
  • Support BIM Execution Plan (BEP) implementation and alignment with project standards.
  • Conduct clash detection using Navisworks, categorize issues, issue reports, and track resolution.
  • Perform BIM audits (purge, warning cleanup, parameter QA) to ensure model health.
  • Manage drawing versions and documentation in CDE platforms (ACC/BIM 360/Procore).
  • Support 4D/5D linkage (schedule + cost) when required by project execution teams.
  • Extract installation quantities using both BIM and CAD platforms
  • Validate vendor equipment dimensions and accessories against electrical room layouts for material procurement accuracy

Cost Control & Procurement
  • Generate accurate quantity takeoffs (QTO) from BIM and CAD models for proposals and project execution.
  • Support cost estimation by aligning quantities with labor units, procurement packaging, and VE alternatives.
  • Track quantity changes and maintain cost-impact logs throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate with field teams and procurement to validate quantities.

Constructability & Technical Support
  • Review conduit/cable tray routing, bend degrees, and access/maintenance clearance.
  • Confirm code considerations (NEC fill ratio, pull box sizing, working clearance, ADA heights, firewall penetrations).
  • Support prefab/modular planning - spool drawings, installation details, hanger elevation controls.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (architectural, mechanical, structural, fire protection, IT/low voltage).
  • Support site verification, walkdowns, and scan-to-BIM integration when needed.
  • Perform lighting illumination studies (IES simulation) to support fixture selection and lighting compliance

Documentation, Submittals & As-Builts
  • Maintain shop drawing logs, RFI logs, revision history, and document control procedures.
  • Prepare coordinated drawing sets for approval and issuance.
  • Develop accurate as-built documentation for turnover and commissioning.
  • Organize sheet sets and ensure drawing format compliance (Titleblocks, ANSI/ARCH).
  • Participate in vendor print review and ensure alignment with project specifications and code requirements

Commissioning & Close-Out Support
  • Ensure final documentation alignment with energized system updates.
  • Support asset tagging, O&M turnover models, and facility handover data structures

Collaboration, Training & Field Support
  • Provide technical support and clarifications to field crews using digital models/drawings.
  • Conduct BIM/CAD workflow onboarding for project teams.
  • Travel to job sites when required to assist with coordination meetings and model verification.
  • Provide support for local regulation-based material selection and procurement coordination

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 4+ years of experience in electrical construction design.
  • Successful design involvement in 3+ electrical construction projects from design to execution.
  • Proficiency in:
    • BIM software (Revit, Navisworks)
    • CAD software (AutoCAD or equivalent)
  • Experience in quantity takeoffs, material tracking, and construction estimation workflows.
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, installation constraints, and NEC/NFPA compliance fundamentals.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in semiconductor, data center, EV battery, or other industrial process facilities.
  • Familiarity with Bluebeam, BIM 360 / Procore, Revit Worksharing, and CDE workflows.
  • Knowledge of 4D/5D BIM integrations and VDC methodologies.
