Description
The Jackson State University Financial Aid Office seeks a Financial Aid Counselor who, as part of a team, will provide direct support to prospective students, current students, undergraduate and/or graduate, their families and supporters, Jackson State University colleagues and the general public related to financial aid programs and policies. This position is involved in all aspects of financial aid administration, including but not limited to counseling of students, determining students' needs, verification and packaging, and loan processing in a fast-paced team environment while complying with federal and state regulations as well as institutional policies.
Examples of Duties
  • Provide guidance and support to students and families regarding financial aid options, processes, and eligibility.
  • Conduct one-on-one counseling sessions to assist students in understanding their financial aid packages and options.
  • Review and evaluate financial aid applications, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and institutional forms.
  • Verify the accuracy of information provided and determine eligibility for federal, state, and institutional financial aid.
  • Maintain accurate records of all financial aid transactions and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations regarding financial aid administration.
  • Assist in preparing reports and documentation for audits and assessments.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, parents, and staff regarding financial aid issues and provide timely resolutions.
  • Maintain a professional and approachable demeanor in all interactions.
  • Work closely with other departments, such as admissions and student services, to enhance the financial aid process and improve student access.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree required, Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to explain financial aid processes to students and families.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including experience with financial aid software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
