Job description


The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing routine testing in toxicology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology laboratory areas to aid physicians and clinical care teams in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient.
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for performing laboratory procedures to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease or disease processes
    • Performs diagnostic and serological testing for interpretation or therapeutic intervention as requested
    • Performs various microscopic, chemical, hematological, immunologic, or bacteriologic assays according to established standards
    • Completes all testing within the established time frame to aid in the treatment of the patient
    • Ensures quality control in processing specimens, ensure appropriate sampling and maintain accurate record keeping
    • Verifies equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrates equipment utilizing approved testing procedures
    • Complies with all laboratory policies and regulations related to safety, cleanliness and infection control
  • Communicates patient and health care information to the appropriate health care provider
    • Identifies and communicates abnormal patient conditions by alerting supervisory personnel or health care provider
    • Reports all critical tests and critical results to the appropriate health care provider in a timely manner
    • Compiles and records test results into the electronic health record

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Education: Associate degree from a NAACLS accredited Medical Lab Technician (MLT) program, or have completed equivalent military training as an MLT.
Licensure: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or equivalent certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). If a new graduate, certification is required within three months.
Experience: No experience required.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: Must know the theory and practice of medical laboratory technology. Must be able to troubleshoot, operate, and maintain automated equipment and to perform manual procedures. Some computer skills are needed.
