Job description

The Thomas Jefferson Foundation has a twofold mission of preservation and education, and was incorporated in 1923 to preserve Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Today, the Foundation seeks to bring history forward into national and global dialogues by engaging audiences with Jefferson's world and ideas, and sharing the history of everyone, enslaved and free, who lived and labored at Monticello. Monticello is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, a United Nations World Heritage Site, and a Site of Conscience.
Staff Accountant
Purpose: The Staff Accountant prepares and processes accounting and reconciliation activity daily, weekly or monthly.
We will look to you to:
  • Reconcile the balance sheet accounts and investigate/solve all discrepancies.
  • Manage corporate credit card system, reporting and reconciliations.
  • Manage the relationship with the outsourced vendor for various state charitable solicitation registration needs.
  • Prepare and post daily journal entries from other systems, which may include retail operations, admissions and Jefferson Vineyards operations.
  • Be the backup for critical functions, including payroll processing and reconciliation and accounts payable processing.
  • Prepare assigned audit and tax return tasks as requested.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of GAAP. Ability to perform advanced accounting reconciliations in accordance with GAAP.
  • Proficient computer skills including high-level Excel skills.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Four-year degree in accounting, business or finance with at least 3 years of applicable work experience. Prior experience processing accounts payable, payroll and Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT software a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Considerations:
Normal office conditions. Usual workweek is approximately 40 hours. May need to work additional hours during audit or year-end processing.
