As of Jun 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for computed radiography ndt in the United States is $43.61, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $33.89 and $50.72 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is Computed Radiography NDT?

Computed Radiography NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) is a digital imaging technique used to inspect the internal structure of materials without causing damage. It utilizes photostimulable phosphor imaging plates instead of traditional X-ray films to capture images of components, which are then digitized and analyzed on a computer. This method offers advantages such as faster image acquisition, easier storage and sharing of results, and enhanced image manipulation for better defect detection. Computed Radiography NDT is widely used in industries like aerospace, oil and gas, and manufacturing for quality control and safety inspections.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computed Radiography NDT Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computed Radiography NDT Technician, you need a solid understanding of non-destructive testing principles, radiographic imaging, and relevant safety standards, often supported by NDT Level II or III certification. Familiarity with computed radiography equipment, digital imaging software, and analysis systems is essential. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help ensure accurate interpretation of results and effective reporting. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the integrity and safety of tested materials and structures in industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, and manufacturing.

What is the difference between Computed Radiography Ndt vs Radiologic Technologist?

AspectComputed Radiography NdtRadiologic Technologist
CertificationsASNT Level II or III, RT certification often requiredARRT certification, state licenses
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, manufacturing, aerospaceHospitals, clinics, medical imaging centers
Industry UsageNon-destructive testing, quality controlMedical diagnosis, patient imaging

While both roles involve radiographic imaging, Computed Radiography Ndt focuses on industrial non-destructive testing to inspect materials and structures, whereas Radiologic Technologists work in healthcare to produce medical images for diagnosis. Certifications, work environments, and industry applications differ significantly, reflecting their distinct purposes.

What are some common challenges faced by Computed Radiography (CR) NDT technicians in the field?

Computed Radiography NDT technicians often face challenges such as ensuring image quality in varying environmental conditions, handling sensitive imaging equipment, and interpreting digital radiographs accurately. Field work may require technicians to adapt to different inspection sites, sometimes with limited power sources or space constraints. Additionally, keeping up with evolving CR technology and maintaining compliance with industry safety standards are ongoing responsibilities. Collaboration with other NDT professionals is essential for troubleshooting complex inspection scenarios and ensuring reliable results.
