Position Summary
The Department of Mathematics at SUNY Geneseo is seeking applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Computational Mathematics, with emphasis on the Mathematics of Computer Science to begin August 2027.
The mathematics of computer science is a broad area at the intersection of mathematics and computer science that investigates the mathematical foundations, design, analysis, and implementation of computation. It encompasses the development and analysis of algorithms, computational methods, mathematical models, and software, as well as the theoretical principles that underlie modern computing. Faculty working in this area may have expertise in subjects such as algorithms, applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, computability, computational complexity, computational mathematics, computer systems, discrete mathematics, machine learning, mathematical modeling, numerical methods, operations research, programming, software engineering, symbolic computation, or closely related fields. We welcome applicants whose work demonstrates a strong mathematical perspective on computation.
The Department of Mathematics (13 full-time members) encompasses pure, applied, and computational mathematics, as well as very strong secondary mathematics teacher preparation and actuarial programs, with a growing interest in data science. The department offers a B.S. in Applied Mathematics, B.S. in Mathematics, B.A. in Mathematics, B.A. in Mathematics with Adolescence (Secondary Education) Certification, Minor in Mathematics, Minor in the Mathematics of Computer Science, and Concentration in Mathematics for Elementary Education.
Our priority is teaching excellence. We seek a colleague with an enthusiastic commitment to undergraduate instruction at all levels, the ability to teach courses across the Mathematics and Mathematics of Computer Science curricula, and the vision to develop new courses that will strengthen and expand our existing Mathematics of Computer Science minor. The successful candidate will play a central role in helping the department expand the current minor towards a full undergraduate major while maintaining an active program of scholarship involving undergraduate students whenever appropriate.
Duties include:
- Teaching lower-level and service courses in the Mathematics of Computer Science and in Mathematics, such as MATH 230-Programming and Mathematical Problem Solving, MATH 240-Object-Oriented Programming, MATH 104-Mathematical Ideas, MATH 112-
Precalculus, and MATH 221-Calculus 1. - Teaching upper-level undergraduate courses in the Mathematics of Computer Science, suchas MATH 303-Theory of Computational Complexity, MATH 304-Theory of Computability,
MATH 332-Linear Programming and Operations Research, MATH 340-Modeling, MATH
342-Statistical and Machine Learning, MATH 382-Discrete Wavelets and Applications,
MATH 384-Computational Graphics, and MATH 385-Mathematical Reasoning and
Advanced Programming Techniques. - Developing and teaching new courses in areas such as artificial intelligence, computer
systems, software engineering, algorithms, computational mathematics, or related areas to
grow our existing minor in the mathematics of computer science. - Maintaining an active and ongoing research agenda.
- Providing academic advisement to students.
- Contributing to the department through committee service.
- Contributing service to the campus community and the discipline.
- Ph.D. in computational mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field (such as mathematics, statistics, operations research, data science, or scientific computing, with relevant preparation or experience in computer science or computation) by August 2027.
- A research specialty or scholarly focus in the mathematics of computer science as described above.
- Demonstrated preparation and/or experience to teach lower- and upper-level courses that support the Mathematics of Computer Science curriculum, with preparation and/or experience in undergraduate instruction.
- Preparation or experience relevant to curriculum development in the Mathematics of Computer Science or related areas.
- Evidence of an active and ongoing research agenda.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and belonging-centered working and/or learning environment.
- Candidates for this position must be eligible to work in the United States. VISA sponsorship is not offered.
- Demonstrated excellence in or enthusiasm for teaching the mathematics of computer science courses at the undergraduate level.
- Demonstrated interest in and ability to supervise undergraduate-focused research, mentoring, or supervision in the mathematics of computer science.
- Demonstrated insights into what programming skills mathematics students and professionals should have as AI programming assistants become widespread.
- Familiarity with one or more of the following areas: algorithms, numerical methods, symbolic computation, artificial intelligence, software engineering, computer systems, or related areas.
- Experience working at the interface of mathematics and computer science.
