Summary:
The Pharmacist Coordinator is responsible for the oversight, coordination, and continuous improvement of sterile compounding operations and related product procurement within the pharmacy department. This position ensures that sterile compounding services are safe, compliant, cost-effective, and aligned with organizational goals, while providing leadership and expertise in both operational practice and strategic purchasing optimization.

Responsibilities: 

Optimize Sterile Product Purchasing and Utilization

•  Lead efforts to optimize the purchasing of sterile compounded products, including outsourced compounded preparations. 
• Analyze utilization patterns, cost data, and supply chain trends to identify opportunities for cost savings, waste reduction, and workflow efficiency.
•  Collaborate with pharmacy leadership, supply chain, and clinical teams to standardize products, minimize duplication, and support formulary recommendations. 
• Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to cost, inventory turns, product availability, and compounding efficiency. 

• Serve as the NC Board of Pharmacy licensed Pharmacist in Charge and designated person of the cleanroom. 
• Provide operational leadership for cleanroom sterile compounding and cleaning activities. 
• Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for sterile compounding, beyond-use dating, labeling, cleaning, and all related documentation. 
• Ensure adherence to quality, safety, and infection prevention standards, including environmental monitoring, personnel competency, and aseptic technique. 
• Coordinate training, competency assessment, ongoing education, and documentation of pharmacists and technicians. 
• Support implementation of new workspaces, technologies, automation, and processes that enhance sterile compounding safety and productivity. 
• Participate in front line staffing as needed. 

• Serve as a subject matter expert for sterile compounding regulations and best practices. 
• Coordinate internal audits, inspections, and corrective action plans to maintain continuous survey readiness. 
• Coordinate initial qualification and routine audits of 503B outsourcing facilities, evaluate regulatory compliance and quality systems, document findings, monitor corrective actions, and support ongoing vendor approval decisions. 
• Support compliance with federal, state, local and institutional policies, procedures, standards, and regulations. 
• Partner with quality, risk management, and infection prevention to investigate and mitigate compounding-related events or near misses. 

• Work closely with pharmacy leadership and pharmacy staff to align sterile compounding services with patient care needs. 
• Participate in and/or lead committees and workgroups related to system standardization of sterile products and operational efficiency. 
• Develop and maintain strategic relationships with vendors and outsourcing facilities, ensuring contract compliance, quality standards, and alignment of purchased products with clinical and operational needs. 
• Precept pharmacy students and residents, providing structured learning experiences, mentorship, and evaluation to support their professional development. 
• Provide formal and informal work performance feedback to team members. 
• Participate in and/or lead candidate interviews and selection for position vacancies as required.

Other information:
Education Requirements:
PharmD or BS Pharmacy Degree.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:

• Active pharmacist licensure with the NC Board of Pharmacy or obtainable before initiation of employment.
•  Compounded Sterile Preparations Pharmacy Specialty Certification (BCSCP) preferred. 

Professional Experience Requirements:
Two years of prior pharmacist experience or equivalent required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

•   In-depth knowledge of USP <797>, USP <800>, and applicable state and federal regulations governing sterile compounding. 
• Demonstrated competency in aseptic technique, cleanroom operations, and hazardous drug handling. 
• Strong understanding of pharmacy purchasing, inventory management, and supply chain principles, particularly for sterile products and outsourced compounding.
•  Proficiency with pharmacy information systems, compounding software, and related automation/technology used in sterile compounding. 
• Ability to analyze data, interpret financial and operational reports, and translate findings into process improvements.
•  Effective leadership and communication skills, including the ability to train, coach, and influence multidisciplinary teams. 
• Experience in quality improvement, audit/inspection readiness, and development of policies, procedures, and competencies. 
• Skill in teaching and precepting, including providing feedback, evaluation, and structured learning experiences for students and residents.
