Job title: Pharmacy Intern; Retail - 1st Year
Brief description:
The Pharmacy Intern assists pharmacists in providing high-quality outpatient pharmacy services while developing clinical, operational, and patient care skills. This role supports medication preparation, dispensing, patient education, and pharmacy operations for a diverse patient population, including same-day surgery patients, oncology infusion patients, and patients enrolled in specialty pharmacy and disease state management programs (DSP).
Under the supervision of licensed pharmacists, the Pharmacy Intern contributes to safe and efficient medication use while gaining experience in ambulatory care, specialty pharmacy services, and patient-centered pharmaceutical care.
Job description:
Patient Care & Clinical Services
  • Provide patient counseling and medication education under pharmacist supervision.
    Assist with immunization services, including vaccine administration in accordance with state regulations and organizational policies.
  • Support the therapy management program and patient follow-up activities.
    Participate in patient outreach and adherence initiatives for specialty and disease state management patients.
  • Assist with bedside delivery coordination for oncology infusion medications and other specialty therapies

Pharmacy Operations
  • Prepare and dispense prescriptions accurately under pharmacist supervision.
  • Perform non-sterile compounding according to USP standards and organizational procedures.
  • Process prescription transfers, refill requests, and medication-related documentation.
  • Assist with medication inventory management, ordering, stocking, and expiration date monitoring.
    Maintain compliance with state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and pharmacy policies.

Specialized Service Support
  • Support medication services for same-day surgery patients, ensuring timely prescription processing and patient education.
  • Assist with coordination of oncology bedside infusion medication deliveries.
    Support specialty pharmacy and DSP patient services, including medication access, refill coordination, and patient communication.
  • Quality Improvement & Projects
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives.
  • Complete assigned pharmacy projects related to workflow optimization, patient care services, clinical programs, or operational efficiency.
  • Assist with data collection, reporting, and presentation of project outcomes.
    Contribute to pharmacy education, training, and process improvement efforts.

Qualifications:
Required
  • Enrolled as a student at the University of Minnesota - College of Pharmacy
  • Registered as pharmacy technician with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy (only required in order to work prior to acquiring pharmacy intern license)
  • Pharmacy Intern license (acquired after completion of College of Pharmacy orientation)
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based healthcare environment

Expected start date: Variable (dependent upon completion of corporate retail pharmacy training)
Anticipated hours during SCHOOL YEAR: 1 closing shift per week (2pm - 6pm*or arrival after completion of class) + 1 Saturday shifty roughly every 3 saturdays (8am to 12pm)
Anticipated hours during SUMMER/WINTER breaks: minimum 3 shifts per week*okay to take trips but expected to pick up shifts when local
