What is the difference between Composites vs Fiberglass Technician?

AspectCompositesFiberglass Technician
Required CredentialsOften requires certifications in composite materials and manufacturingTypically needs certifications in fiberglass handling and repair
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, aerospace, automotive, marine industriesBoat yards, repair shops, manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageUsed in aerospace, automotive, sports equipment, marinePrimarily in boat repair, fiberglass fabrication
Work TasksDesign, layup, curing, and finishing composite partsCutting, sanding, repairing fiberglass structures

Composites involve working with advanced materials like carbon fiber and epoxy resins for high-performance applications, while fiberglass technicians focus on handling and repairing fiberglass structures. Both roles require specific certifications and are used across manufacturing and repair industries, but composites generally involve more complex manufacturing processes.

What are composites?

Composites are materials made from two or more distinct components, typically a matrix and a reinforcement, to create a material with superior properties compared to the individual components. Common examples include carbon fiber reinforced polymers and fiberglass. These materials are widely used in industries like aerospace, automotive, construction, and sports equipment because of their high strength-to-weight ratio, durability, and resistance to corrosion. Working with composites involves processes such as layering, molding, and curing to achieve the desired shape and performance characteristics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Composites Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Composites Technician, you generally need knowledge of composite materials, fabrication techniques, blueprint reading, and a relevant technical diploma or certification. Familiarity with tools such as vacuum infusion systems, autoclaves, CNC machines, and software like CAD is typically required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, teamwork, and problem-solving are crucial soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills and qualities ensure the precise manufacturing, repair, and quality control of composite parts, which are critical for industries like aerospace, automotive, and marine.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in composites manufacturing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in composites manufacturing often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistent material quality, managing complex fabrication processes, and maintaining safety standards when handling chemicals and resins. Addressing these challenges typically involves rigorous quality control procedures, ongoing training on new manufacturing technologies, and close collaboration with engineers and quality assurance teams. Staying current with industry best practices and participating in regular safety briefings can also help mitigate risks and improve workflow efficiency.

Job description

Company Overview
Hybron is an advanced manufacturing company that is building lightweight composites at mass production scale. At Hybron, we have pioneered a new composites manufacturing process that enables complex, high performance composite parts to be produced 10-100 times faster than traditional manufacturing, at a fraction of the cost.
We recently closed an oversubscribed $25M seed round, are backed by the Northrop Grumman Technology Accelerator, and are rapidly growing to commercialize and mass produce composite products at a scale never seen before. Our current focus is applying our proprietary process to composite artillery shells, solid rocket motor nozzles, gas turbine engine components, and airframes.
If you want to join a rapidly growing company working on cutting edge composites technology while building capabilities for the warfighter and reshoring U.S. manufacturing, then we want to speak with you.
About the Role
This is a full-time, in-person role at our El Segundo facility. As you will be working at an early-stage deep tech startup, this role will span many different tasks. You will need to be a self-starter and be adaptable to performing many different jobs. Along with these high expectations comes the opportunity to significantly influence the product development, strategy, and trajectory of a fast-growing startup company. Your work will tangibly impact our company and the composites industry, and you will be able to make rapid professional gains in an environment that encourages growth and innovation.
As the first Stress Engineer, youโ€™ll lay the foundation for and own the structural analysis of Hybronโ€™s fiber-reinforced composites, using a novel material construction. Youโ€™ll build and validate advanced FEA models, guide design and material choices, and ensure parts meet demanding aerospace, defense, and energy requirements. Your work will bridge simulation, testing, and manufacturing, directly shaping how our technology is applied and optimized for mission-critical applications like artillery shells and aerospace structures.
Working in a high-growth company, you will be wearing many hats: project management, requirements identification, simulation/analysis, product design, testing design, test execution, quality inspection, cross-team collaboration, customer engagement, and more.
Growth Opportunities
As Hybron grows, structural analysis is expected to be a key capability that our company develops. As the first stress engineer on the team, there will be significant opportunity to build and lead Hybronโ€™s composites structural analysis team, with pathways to a manager role, director role, and beyond.
  • Make key decisions and spearhead initiatives that will directly shape Hybronโ€™s simulation capabilities and methodology
  • Identify and execute on developing/integrating strategic technological capabilities
  • Manage a team of structural engineers for product and technology development
  • Contribute to IP and novel analysis techniques
  • Assist with technical business development efforts
  • Spearhead, oversee, and deliver on large technology development initiatives

What weโ€™re looking for
  • Must be a U.S. Person pursuant to EAR and ITAR definitions
  • Ability to work in-person at our facility in El Segundo
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in a relevant engineering or science field (Composites, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials Science, Polymer Science, etc.)
  • 3+ years of industry experience in composites stress analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in building and refining an FEA model for a novel material or composition
  • Ability to build up an entire FEA system, including software selection and setup, parameter selection, and initial testing and validation
  • Ability to utilize FEA to design and optimize composite geometries to minimize weight and optimize performance
  • Ability to design mechanical test methods for coupon, representative part, and final part geometries
  • Ability to oversee the execution of these tests, ideally with experience in performing the tests themselves
  • Experience with failure analysis and root cause analysis
  • Strong CAD proficiency for part, assembly, and drawing creation with GD&T
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a drive to deliver on ambitious schedules, even and especially if unconventional & creative solutions are necessary to do so
  • Thrives in cross-functional organizations with strong communication and collaboration

Nice to Haves
  • Experience with simulating both chopped fiber materials and continuous fiber layups
  • Experience with Abaqus simulation software
  • Experience with thermal simulations
  • Composites manufacturing experience
  • Experience in the Aerospace or Defense industry
  • Experience simulating projectiles under high g-loads
  • Experience with creating and presenting business cases to upper management
  • Experience working at or leading a small company/business, or with small teams

Compensation and Schedule
  • $138,000 โ€“ $249,000 per year
  • Significant stock options in the company
  • Potential additional compensation
  • Mondays โ€“ Fridays in-person
    ย
Benefits
  • Paid time off
  • Vacation โ€“ 10+ working days per year
  • Sick โ€“ 5 working days per year
