How much do composites jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for composites in the United States is $23.55, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $27.40 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are composites?

Composites are materials made from two or more distinct components, typically a matrix and a reinforcement, to create a material with superior properties compared to the individual components. Common examples include carbon fiber reinforced polymers and fiberglass. These materials are widely used in industries like aerospace, automotive, construction, and sports equipment because of their high strength-to-weight ratio, durability, and resistance to corrosion. Working with composites involves processes such as layering, molding, and curing to achieve the desired shape and performance characteristics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a composites technician?

To thrive as a Composites Technician, you generally need knowledge of composite materials, fabrication techniques, blueprint reading, and a relevant technical diploma or certification. Familiarity with tools such as vacuum infusion systems, autoclaves, CNC machines, and software like CAD is typically required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, teamwork, and problem-solving are crucial soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills and qualities ensure the precise manufacturing, repair, and quality control of composite parts, which are critical for industries like aerospace, automotive, and marine.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in composites manufacturing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in composites manufacturing often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistent material quality, managing complex fabrication processes, and maintaining safety standards when handling chemicals and resins. Addressing these challenges typically involves rigorous quality control procedures, ongoing training on new manufacturing technologies, and close collaboration with engineers and quality assurance teams. Staying current with industry best practices and participating in regular safety briefings can also help mitigate risks and improve workflow efficiency.

What is the difference between Composites vs Fiberglass Technician?

AspectCompositesFiberglass Technician
Required CredentialsOften requires certifications in composite materials and manufacturingTypically needs certifications in fiberglass handling and repair
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, aerospace, automotive, marine industriesBoat yards, repair shops, manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageUsed in aerospace, automotive, sports equipment, marinePrimarily in boat repair, fiberglass fabrication
Work TasksDesign, layup, curing, and finishing composite partsCutting, sanding, repairing fiberglass structures

Composites involve working with advanced materials like carbon fiber and epoxy resins for high-performance applications, while fiberglass technicians focus on handling and repairing fiberglass structures. Both roles require specific certifications and are used across manufacturing and repair industries, but composites generally involve more complex manufacturing processes.

Is a composites technician a good career?

A composites technician specializes in manufacturing and repairing composite materials used in industries like aerospace, automotive, and marine. The role often requires knowledge of materials, tools, and safety procedures, with opportunities for advancement and stable employment in manufacturing environments. It can be a good career for those interested in hands-on work and technical skills development.

Come join the SURVICE Engineering mission to protect, enhance, and enable those who defend the United States. Since 1981, we have supported the DoD community, as well as Homeland Security, advanced technologies, environmental, and commercial markets. Our employees have backgrounds in engineering, physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science, acquisition, technical writing, training, and other technical and administrative fields. And many of our personnel have DoD and/or operational military experience. If you're looking for a challenging and rewarding career with a leading organization, come see what we can offer you!
Position
Composites Researcher
  • Location: Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland
  • Security Clearance: U.S. citizenship required
  • Salary: $85,000 - $105,000 Depending on Experience and Education
  • Travel: 5%
  • Benefits: SURVICE Engineering offers a total rewards package to include competitive salaries, comprehensive insurance options, paid time off, 401k, flexible spending, tuition reimbursement.

Position Summary
SURVICE Engineering is currently seeking a Composites Expert to support our Aberdeen Research Operation. You will accelerate your career and become an integral team member within the defense community.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Fabricate flat panel fiber reinforced laminates of arbitrary architecture for material characterization using hand-lay-up, filament winding, VARTM or advanced fiber placement technology (AFP) for autoclave or compression molding consolidation.
  • Operate basic machining equipment (surface grinder, CNC mill, slot grinding, band saw) to convert as-processed flat composite panels into test coupons that meet specified ASTM geometries and tabbing guidelines.
  • Instrument/prepare both ASTM and non-standard test samples with strain measuring approaches including strain gage, extensometer, and digital image correlation (DIC).
  • Operate complex data acquisition equipment to capture in-situ material response data using a variety of methods.
  • Design, engineer and plan non-standard experiments for sub-component or prototype articles to support performance evaluations and model development and validation.
  • Design unique prototype concepts for testing material properties.
  • Measure materials response of composites and plastics using appropriate ASTM or equivalent standard test protocols.
  • Collect, organize, and reduce data to report on basic engineering constants, mechanical properties for database development and screening/ranking of performance.
  • Fabricate digital laminates using commercial codes and assess property using computational methods.
  • Design laminate structures and component geometries in Solidworks. Export and or translate to engineering software for build or material property analysis in Autodyne or CGTech commercial codes.
