Assistant Director, Marketing Strategist Small Business

The Hartford is seeking an Assistant Director, Marketing Strategist to help transform business priorities into insight-driven marketing strategies that drive growth, engagement, adoption, retention, and customer value. This role serves as a- strategic partner to Small Business, Product, Sales, Distribution, Analytics, Enterprise Marketing, and channel teams, translating customer insights, business objectives, competitive intelligence, and market trends into actionable marketing recommendations.

The ideal candidate excels at connecting research and data to marketing strategy and is equally comfortable developing go-to-market plans, audience strategies, messaging frameworks, creative briefs, and measurement approaches. This individual will independently lead strategic initiatives from concept through recommendation to execution while influencing stakeholders across multiple functions.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing Strategy & Go-to-Market Planning

  • Develop integrated marketing strategies that support business priorities, product launches, capability adoption, customer experience improvements, and growth initiatives.

  • Translate business objectives into actionable marketing plans, audience strategies, positioning, messaging, channel recommendations, launch plans, and success metrics.

  • Lead development of go-to-market strategies, including audience prioritization, value proposition development, and market activation planning.

  • Provide strategic recommendations that inform annual and quarterly planning activities.

Audience & Customer Insights

  • Analyze customer, market, competitive, and performance data to identify actionable insights that inform marketing strategy.

  • Develop audience segmentation frameworks, customer journey recommendations, and persona-driven marketing approaches.

  • Partner with research and analytics teams to translate findings into business and marketing recommendations.

Positioning, Messaging & Creative Strategy

  • Develop value propositions, messaging frameworks, campaign concepts, and strategic narratives.

  • Create clear, actionable strategic briefs that align stakeholders and agency partners around strategic direction.

  • Ensure messaging is customer-centric, differentiated, insight-driven, and consistent across channels.

  • Translate complex insurance products, capabilities, and business concepts into compelling customer benefits.

Cross-Functional Partnership & Influence

  • Serve as a strategic partner across Product, Sales, Distribution, Underwriting, Customer Experience, Analytics, and Marketing teams.

  • Lead strategic working sessions and facilitate alignment among stakeholders with diverse priorities and perspectives.

  • Influence decision-making through recommendations supported by research, insights, performance data, and business context.

Measurement & Optimization

  • Define success metrics and measurement approaches for campaigns and strategic initiatives.

  • Partner with analytics teams to evaluate performance and identify optimization opportunities.

  • Develop post-launch recommendations and learning agendas to improve future performance.

  • Support a culture of testing, learning, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in marketing strategy, product marketing, communications strategy, consulting, market research, or related disciplines.

  • Demonstrated experience developing marketing strategies, go-to-market plans, positioning, and messaging for complex products, services, or business initiatives.

  • Strong experience translating customer insights, research, and data into actionable recommendations.

  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority and move work forward in a matrixed environment.

  • Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, presentation, and executive-ready storytelling skills.

  • Experience within insurance, financial services, healthcare, technology, or another highly regulated industry.

  • Experience supporting product launches, adoption initiatives, customer experience programs, or change management efforts.

  • Experience defining KPIs and performance readouts that inform optimization decisions

  • Familiarity with AI-enabled marketing tools and emerging marketing technologies.

  • Experience working with agencies, creative partners, and research providers.

Success in this role will be measured by:

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$104,800 - $157,200
