What is a community solar?

A Community Solar job involves working on projects that provide shared solar energy to multiple households or businesses. These roles can include sales, project management, policy advocacy, customer support, or technical installation. The goal is to expand access to clean energy by enabling people to benefit from solar power without installing panels on their own property. Employees in this field collaborate with utilities, developers, and communities to promote and implement solar programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the community solar position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Community Solar role, you need a strong understanding of renewable energy systems, project management, and community outreach, often supported by experience in solar energy or environmental science. Familiarity with solar design software, customer relationship management (CRM) platforms, and knowledge of regulatory policies are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help build trust with community stakeholders and manage multiple projects effectively. These skills ensure successful project implementation, community engagement, and the overall growth of solar adoption at the local level.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in community solar?

Professionals in Community Solar often spend their days coordinating solar project development, engaging with community members to educate and sign up participants, and collaborating with local governments or utilities. They may attend meetings, conduct site assessments, manage project timelines, and respond to inquiries from residents or businesses considering solar participation. The work environment can be a mix of office, site visits, and local events, emphasizing both independent tasks and teamwork with engineers, sales professionals, and community organizers. This variety keeps the role dynamic while ensuring projects are developed smoothly and community members remain informed and involved.

Job description

About Us:

Distributed Sun (DSUN) is a clean energy infrastructure provider founded in 2009 that develops, finances, owns, and operates solar and battery storage projects across the community solar, commercial & industrial and utility-scale markets. It has developed and delivered systems – many the first-of-their-kind – in 17 states. It is in our DNA to be nimble, constructively challenging, forward thinking, and creative; we value those attributes in our team members – it’s how we’ve led and thrived over the last 15 years. You’ll join a team committed to accelerating the clean energy transition through smart infrastructure and bold thinking.

truCurrent, a DSUN on-site distributed energy resources company, provides end-to-end energy transition services for Fortune 500 companies and other enterprises. truCurrent integrates microgrid infrastructure aligned to regulatory and capital markets to deliver energy solutions at the grid edge. Trusted partners rely upon our energy transition roadmap services combined with development and financing solutions to meet or exceed their energy goals: economic, environmental and operational. Our focus is projects that serve C&I clients, data centers, EV charging infrastructure, and behind-the-meter battery storage applications.

The successful candidate will combine experience of most but not necessarily all of the responsibilities and qualifications listed below. trucurrent is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity. Employment decisions are made on the basis of qualifications, merit and business need. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply.

Responsibilities:

Position Overview

This is a role for a results-driven individual with a ‘client-first’ mindset, who will take responsibility for targeting, qualifying, and securing business and revenue growth opportunities for multiple technologies across our Energy-as-a-Service business. You will play a key role in identifying new business in the corporate energy transition sector, particularly BESS, Solar PV and EV charging infrastructure. This role is ideal for someone with a strong track record in renewable energy sales or a background in project development who is looking to leverage their industry expertise and relationships to drive business growth. If you have a demonstrated ability to build trust-based relationships with clients, presenting tailored, value-driven solutions that align with customer needs, we’d love to hear from you.

Senior/Manager, Business Development Responsibilities

• Originate and close new distribution-connected projects across storage, fuel cell, solar, EV charging, and microgrid projects

• Develop and execute business development strategies aligned with go-to-market plans and revenue targets

• Identify and engage prospects through targeted outreach and stakeholder mapping

• Build strong client relationships, understand needs, and deliver tailored solutions

• Lead proposal development, presentations, and client communications aligning with company brand

• Negotiate and finalize commercial agreements, ensuring mutually beneficial outcomes

• Collaborate cross-functionally to evaluate opportunities and structure compelling solutions

• Maintain accurate pipeline tracking in CRM systems

• Lead internal BD meetings with clear objectives and follow-through

• Champion projects through the full sales and development lifecycle

Qualifications:

• Proven experience (minimum of 3+ years) originating and closing complex energy deals with large C&I customers and/or utilities

• Experienced in energy industry with understanding of electricity markets, distributed generation, and energy infrastructure (ideally BESS) preferred

• Demonstrated ability to manage full sales cycles and multiple concurrent deals

• Excellent communication and presentation skills; ability to craft clear, compelling narratives

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; comfortable working with financial models

• Ability to work cross-functionally and engage stakeholders from technical teams to the C-suite

• Self-motivated, organized, and able to operate with autonomy

• Proficiency in MS Office and CRM tools

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

• Willingness to travel up to 30%

Location:

Willingness to work flexibly, Tues/Weds in our Washington, DC HQ, Mon/Thurs/Fri from home is preferred, or remote. Please note that our team operates on Eastern Time hours.

Benefits:
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Bonus compensation plan
  • Unit option award
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits plan
