Job description
Capital One, a Fortune 500 company and one of the nation's top 10 banks, offers a broad spectrum of financial products and services to consumers, small businesses and commercial clients. Our goal is to create one of the nation's great banks, and we have the necessary ingredients: a strong balance sheet, resilient businesses, a massive customer franchise, strong analytical capabilities, and great people. We nurture a work environment where people with a variety of thoughts, ideas and backgrounds, guided by our shared values, come together to make Capital One a great company - and a great place to work.
Global External Affairs works with many external and internal stakeholders to envision and create a world of greater socioeconomic opportunity through advocating for an inclusive society, building thriving communities, and creating financial tools that enrich lives. Our teams include Communications, Community Impact and Investment (CI&I), Community Finance, CRA Strategy and Program Management, the Government and Political Affairs Group, Regulatory Relations, and Strategy and Engagement. Through our teams, we have unparalleled access to a diverse group of motivated changemakers similarly focused on the ingredients for a more perfect future.
Our approach involves focusing on innovation and opportunity related to long term well being for our associates, customers, and communities. On the intersection between business and social impact. On disruption and dreaming of a better way. This is the language of changing things for the better. The Community Impact and Investment (CI&I) team creates impactful community outcomes and positions Capital One as the most strategically bold, innovative, and mission driven financial institution through:
- Fueling strategic community investments (e.g. grants, skills, loans)
- Delivering insights, advice and resources that inform Capital One's products and services
- Activating the capabilities of "impact forward" associates
The Community Impact and Investment team supports Capital One through leading enterprise volunteerism, conducting market research, fostering community relationships, grant making, originating Community Development Financial/Institution (CDFI) loans and partnering with and advising LOBs.
The Opportunity and Role:
Community Impact and Investment is on a multiyear transformation journey to increasingly align business strategy and social impact; launch new, different, and more holistic approaches to investing in our communities; use Capital One's volunteer time and talent in increasingly strategic ways; and use data, analytics, research, and inclusive design to inform more targeted and actionable consulting to our business partners on topics related to a broad view of financial inclusion.
We're seeking a talented and energetic Director to join our Market Engagement team, leading the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and South Central regions. This team is charged with deeply understanding challenges and opportunities in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and South Central communities and bringing that market intelligence to bear to ensure we are investing in high impact programs with demonstrable outcomes and with partners to advance socioeconomic mobility in the community while maximizing impact for Capital One's reputation and business agenda. This is a team of relationship-first changemakers who build strong external relationships and distill insights, make connections and identify and execute on opportunities for Capital One to make investments at the nexus of community impact and Capital One's business strategy.
This role involves up to 30% travel as needed. It also involves attending events before and after normal business hours including overnight trips or conferences.
In this role, you'll be a people manager that is expected to demonstrate proficiency in two key areas:
Gathering Market Intelligence:
- You will provide thought leadership to identify and engage key community leaders in creating new approaches to pressing community needs.
- You will be a critical go-to person for community leaders to help solve those needs.
- You'll manage the team that conducts research and market scans to identify, analyze, and vet possible partners across a wide variety of community organizations including social and nonprofit organizations, activists, influencers, small business leaders, policymakers, CDFIs and other funding organizations or in-market financial services providers across the Mid-Atlantic market and beyond.
- You'll create and manage critical relationships with various community leaders to understand how Capital One shows up in our communities relative to how we are supporting community needs and moving the needle on socioeconomic mobility.
- You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the entire enterprise to monitor and evaluate risks.
- You will create and facilitate learning agendas for engaging with key market and national stakeholders.
- You will attend key conferences and convenings nationwide in partnership with other team members and executives to systematically capture and disseminate key insights to inform decision-making, while managing a repeatable process for others across the team to do the same.
Transforming Market Intelligence Into Tangible Impact:
- You will develop regional and national investment strategies (inclusive of grant funding, advocacy and skill-based contributions) that deliver on regulatory, reputational and data-driven community needs
- You will lead strategic initiatives on behalf of Market Engagement, CI&I and Global External Affairs inclusive of multi-region or national investments, cross-collaborative opportunities and strategic initiatives.
- You will create presentations and reports to bring market insights to CI&I, Global External Affairs, and other business lines to inform where, how and why Capital One makes market investments that advance its mission.
- You'll partner closely with your market team and your peers on our analytics program team, and other business lines to write proposals for new investments in the region and at a national level.
- You'll represent Capital One externally to tell the story of Capital One's community and business investments and be able to confidently speak to Capital One's business and community practices within the business and broader community.
Running the team with a Business Mindset:
- You'll learn about the business priorities and determine where our investments can assist with meeting or enhancing business objectives.
- You'll flex your consultative skills to determine how best to partner and advise on how a team can achieve greater societal impact through strategic philanthropic investment.
- You'll define KPIs for your team and engagement models and will be responsible for measuring and tracking to those measures, with an eye to adjusting and refining your roadmap as the data dictates.
- You'll regularly evaluate and improve the efficiency of our community engagement approach, as well as the operational model used to deliver the value.
Transformational Leadership
- You'll be responsible for attracting and retaining top talent to your team
- You'll coach your team towards great business acumen, building strong stakeholder relationships, bringing a data-driven eye to evaluating need and opportunity and excelling in ambiguity
- You'll model ruthless prioritization and the art of getting to yes...and saying no
- You'll rally your teams and senior stakeholders to your vision and strategy
We want you if you are:
- Impact-driven. You dream big. You desire to make the world a better place, and you get energy from working with others with similar passions to accomplish big, bold goals.
- Wired for collaboration and connection: You thrive in a matrixed organization because you know that together we can do better. You're obsessed with building and cultivating relationships. You love the chance to share your perspective, to hear the perspectives of others, and to figure out how teams can collaborate.
- Do-er. You're biased toward action, you try things and sometimes you fail. You can get around your own roadblocks and you remove obstacles for your team to stay focused on enterprise goals.
- Intellectually curious, with a strong point of view. You ask why, you explore, you're comfortable with ambiguity, you're hungry to learn and a seeker of new challenges. You use this curiosity to develop and then refine, and refine, and refine your Point Of Views.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or military experience
- At least 8 years of experience in project management, process management, project delivery, or any combination of the three
- At least 4 years of experience working in a for-profit company
- At least 5 years of experience in people leadership
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in market analysis
- Experience with complex stakeholder management
- Experience with the external community in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and South Central (specifically DC, Maryland, Northern Virginia, Richmond, Atlanta, South Florida, Louisiana & Texas)
- Experience working for a financial services company
- Experience delivering on Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) investments
- Experience in sales or other domains deeply dependent on the quality of relationship management
- Experience using AI to create efficiencies
- Community organizing, nonprofit, or political experience
