Part-Time Recreation Leader

The City of Falls Church Recreation and Parks Department is recruiting for our part-time Recreation Leader position in the Falls Church Community Center to support many of the fun programs and events offered by the City. 

The Recreation and Parks Department offers a year-round program of recreational and leisure-time activities for all age groups and interest levels. These programs include a variety of classes, athletic leagues, special events, and trips. We sponsor special events throughout the year including the annual Memorial Day Parade and Festival, July 4 Fireworks, the Fall Festival, and Holiday Craft Show. The Recreation and Parks Department is also responsible for managing and maintaining neighborhood parks and the Cherry Hill Farmhouse and Barn.
The Falls Church Community Center is the main location for the Recreation and Parks Department. The Community Center hosts most of our programs and is the location of our staff offices.

This is a temporary, part-time as-needed position and is available immediately.

Work Schedule:

Recreation Leaders are scheduled for the hours the Falls Church Community Center is open outside of regular business hours.  This includes Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 5-10pm; Fridays 5-11pm; Saturdays 8am-1pm, 1-5pm, 5-11pm; and Sundays 12-6pm or 2-6pm depending on the month.  

Applicants can be expected to be scheduled 5-15 hours per week, depending on needs of the department. Shifts are fairly consistent week to week. Hours will vary depending on needs of the department. The current open shift is Thursdays, 5-10pm, but the applicant must have the flexibility to be scheduled for any of the shifts listed above. The applicant would be assigned other shifts that may become available or be asked to fill in as a substitute.

The candidate selected must be available to work special events, some of which are on holidays.   All employees are expected to work Memorial Day, our Independence Day event, our Falls Church Festival and at least one additional special event throughout the calendar year.  An ideal candidate is flexible and able to substitute as needed.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide friendly customer service to visitors at the front desk of the Community Center and through email and telephone.  Advises patrons of various Community Center policies and procedures;
  • Assists patrons registering for programs/activities and provides information and supervision of facility rentals;
  • Facilitates check-in for open gym users and monitors open gym sessions;
  • Performs general administrative work as required including attending meetings, preparing correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, greeting and assisting office visitors, etc.;
  • Opens, closes, secures and maintains a safe program environment. Serves as the supervisor in charge of the facility;
  • Administers first aid as required and completes injury and incident reports;
  • Performs other tasks as required.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma plus some college level course work in recreation, physical education, or a related field preferred;
  • Some leadership experience in recreation with individuals and groups at various age levels;
  • Must have experience providing customer service;
  • Must have first aid training or class taken within six months of employment;
  • Computer savvy and familiar with MS Office programs;
