Job description

Under the guidance of the Director of Property and Grounds and in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures established by the YMCA, the Maintenance Assistant is responsible for any grounds keeping, general housekeeping duties or repairs at the Peoria YMCA.  In the absence of the Director of Property and Grounds, the maintenance assistant is expected to react to facility incidents requiring immediate resolution.  

The Maintenance Assistant understands that character development is the chief mission of the YMCA and personally exhibits a commitment to this goal in all YMCA operations. 


  • Assist with the development of and implementation of an overall facility maintenance plan, including routine and preventive maintenance of all facility mechanical functions.
  • Performs maintenance of landscape, HVAC systems, basic electrical and plumbing work, and carpentry.
  • Assist in all necessary repairs, construction projects, and upkeep to buildings, including painting, roofing, fire safety, tile repair, minor electrical, HVAC preventative maintenance and plumbing and carpentry.
  • Ensure the safety of all guests when operating power equipment and landscaping machinery
  • Assist with housekeeping when required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for keeping the Director of Property and Grounds informed of maintenance and facility related issues that could affect the overall operation of the YMCA.
  • Represents the YMCA with key community organizations and events as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum of High School diploma or the equivalent.
  • Related experience with landscaping, facility mechanical systems is required.
  • Electrical and carpentry knowledge preferred.  
  • A general knowledge of the use of power equipment, hand and power tools, electrical, plumbing, flooring and tile, cardio and exercise equipment repair and the ability to understand and repair mechanical systems.
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Basic math skills and the ability to apply math concepts such as percentages, fractions, ratios, etc. as they relate to facility maintenance.
  • Ability to define and solve problems, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
  • Must be able to develop a clear understanding of the YMCA as an organization and how the YMCA relates to and serves the community.
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels or responsibility.  Must be able to make judgement decisions readily.
  •  Knowledge of community resources is necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Required to stand: walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel crouch, or crawl; talk and hear.  May be required to climb or balance.  Must be able to regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds.  Vision abilities include both close vision and distance vision. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, heat and/or cold conditions, dirt, dust, vapors, and maintenance chemicals.
