What is a communications engineer?

A communications engineer builds and maintains telecommunication systems, from radio to satellite to internet technologies. As a communications engineer, your job duties include designing and developing communications networks from the ground up, installing and testing communications systems, troubleshooting and debugging existing systems, and fixing problems as they arise. The qualifications for a career as a communications engineer include a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field, and experience working on communications systems. You need strong technical skills and the ability to continuously learn new technologies.

What does a communications engineer do?

A Communications Engineer designs, develops, and maintains communication systems and networks, such as telephone, radio, satellite, and internet connections. They ensure reliable and efficient transmission of data and voice signals, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement new technologies to improve performance. Communications Engineers may work with both hardware and software, collaborating with other technical teams to support large-scale infrastructure projects and meet industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a communications engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Communications Engineer, you need a solid understanding of telecommunications principles, networking, signal processing, and typically a degree in electrical or communications engineering. Familiarity with tools such as network analyzers, RF simulation software, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ are often required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you collaborate on complex projects and troubleshoot issues efficiently. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure reliable, secure, and high-performing communications systems in rapidly evolving technology environments.

What are some common challenges communications engineers face when working on large-scale infrastructure projects?

Communications Engineers working on large-scale infrastructure projects often encounter challenges such as integrating new systems with legacy technologies, ensuring network security and reliability, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. They must also manage tight deadlines and evolving project requirements, which can require adaptability and strong problem-solving skills. Effective communication with stakeholders, including project managers, IT professionals, and external vendors, is essential to successfully address these challenges and deliver robust communication solutions.

WHAT WE'RE DOING
Join the EADGE-T team and help modernize one of the world's most advanced integrated air and missile defense systems. EADGE-T delivers an integrated air and missile defense and air battle management capability for the United Arab Emirates by connecting existing sensors, weapons, and emerging technologies into a unified defense solution.
As part of the UAE Tech Refresh, you'll help deliver hardware modernization and foundational cybersecurity enhancements that will shape the next generation of the EADGE-T system. This is an opportunity to design and deploy mission-critical capabilities while partnering directly with an international customer.
THE WORK
As a Network Communications Engineer, you'll design, integrate, secure, and optimize the communications infrastructure that enables mission-critical air and missile defense operations.
Working closely with systems, software, cybersecurity, hardware, and integration engineers, you'll develop resilient network architectures supporting multiple security domains while ensuring exceptional performance, reliability, and security. From system design through integration, testing, and deployment, you'll play a key role in delivering operational capability to the customer.
PLEASE NOTE
  • This position requires a government security clearance at the Secret level; you must be a U.S. Citizen for consideration.
  • This position may require travel to customer sites throughout the United Arab Emirates.
  • This position may occasionally support integration and test events during overnight or weekend hours.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design and develop secure, resilient network architectures by decomposing system requirements into functional, logical, and physical network designs supporting mission-critical air and missile defense capabilities.

  • Develop and implement network infrastructure solutions, including LAN/WAN architecture, firewall policies, IP addressing, Quality of Service (QoS), encryption, authentication, network continuity, and monitoring strategies.

  • Install, configure, and integrate routers, switches, firewalls, and supporting infrastructure with mission systems, server environments, data links, and WAN networks while ensuring compliance with DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).

  • Optimize network performance through capacity planning, latency analysis, bandwidth optimization, and traffic engineering using technologies such as MPLS, segment routing, policing, and traffic shaping.

  • Troubleshoot complex network and cybersecurity issues by performing root cause analysis and utilizing tools such as Wireshark, NetFlow, telemetry platforms, and commercial network monitoring solutions.

  • Implement Zero Trust networking principles and support cybersecurity compliance through NIST 800-53 controls, firewall rule management, zone segmentation, centralized security management, and network automation using Ansible, Python, and scripting tools.

  • Create technical documentation, network diagrams, and operational procedures while collaborating across multidisciplinary engineering teams and mentoring junior engineers to support successful system delivery.

WHO WE ARE
EADGE-T is a geographically dispersed engineering team delivering the UAE Tech Refresh through an Agile Scrum development environment. Our team works across systems, software, hardware, cybersecurity, networking, and integration disciplines to deliver next-generation air and missile defense capabilities.
