Job Description
The Bus Driver Trainee will undergo training to prepare for a career as a licensed bus driver with Houston ISD. The trainee will participate in Commercial Driver License (CDL) classes provided by Houston ISD, designed to prepare for the written tests administered by the Department of Public Safety (DPS). Observe and learn from experienced CDL drivers on active routes. Complete hands-on behind-the-wheel training to successfully pass the DPS driving skills test to obtain a CDL.

Responsibilities
  1. Bus Driver Trainee will be responsible for participating in the Houston ISD CDL training program, which includes skills performance and observation. This program aims to equip trainees with the necessary skills and techniques to successfully pass the Texas Department of Public Safety skills tests required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.
  2. Bus Driver Trainee must obtain the Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) within 20 hours of classroom training.
  3. Bus Driver Trainee must complete behind-the-wheel training and be prepared for the road test within 20 business days from the first training session.
  4. Bus Driver Trainee will be permitted a maximum of two (2) attempts to successfully pass each of the required skills tests.
  5. Establish and maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  6. Read and follow established procedures and guidelines.

Job Qualifications
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or GED
WORK EXPERIENCE
6 months to 1 year and 2 years' experience as a licensed driver (Class C or higher).
TYPE OF SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION
Equipment Vehicles (e.g., automobile, truck, tractor, forklift) Clear and valid Texas Driver's License (Class C or higher). Must pass a pre-employment Texas School Bus Driver physical exam and pre-employment drug test Must have an acceptable driving record and criminal history
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
Level 1-No supervisory responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice, and training to staff.
WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT
-Work and tasks are often straightforward, routine, structured and guided by established policies and procedures. Little, if any, independent judgment is required, outside of making basic choices in the selection and application of established methods. The job receives frequent, ongoing supervision.
BUDGET AUTHORITY
-No budget development activity is required.
PROBLEM SOLVING
-Decisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job's own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures, or services.
IMPACT OF DECISIONS
-Follow rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.
COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS
-Basic communication - very little communication required such as receiving basic instructions. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor, and co-workers in own department.
CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS
-Follows through with customer inquiries, requests, and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution.
WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
-Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Ability to carry and/or lift up to 15 to 44 pounds.
