Description
The Role:
The Speranza Lab at Texas Biomedical Research Institute is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant (RA) to support cutting-edge research on host immune responses to emerging infectious diseases. Our HoPE Lab ( https://www.speranzalab.com/ ) investigates how immune responses are coordinated and orchestrated within the tissue microenvironment during early infection. This position offers hands-on experience in high-containment research environments, including biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) and biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) laboratories, and is ideal for candidates interested in immunology, infectious diseases, animal research, and computational biology. We use a wide range of standard and advanced immunological and molecular techniques to characterize infection dynamics and define the role of innate immune pathways. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to impactful research in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform entry-level laboratory research in immunology and infectious disease models
  • Execute experiments in BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratory settings following strict safety protocols
  • Work with laboratory animal models, including colony maintenance, handling, and record-keeping
  • Apply standard and emerging immunological, molecular, and cellular biology techniques
  • Generate, analyze, and manage experimental data, including basic computational/data analysis tasks
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure compliance with SOPs and quality standards
  • Coordinate supply ordering and assist with ongoing research projects
  • Maintain a clean and organized research environment, including disinfecting and autoclaving materials
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary research teams

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree form a 4 year university preferably in Immunology, Microbiology, Biology, Infectious Diseases, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with animal research, including handling and colony management
  • Prior work in BSL-3 or BSL-4 laboratories or other high-containment environments
  • Familiarity with computational biology, data analysis, or bioinformatics tools
  • Experience with immunological assays, molecular biology techniques, or infectious disease models
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Why Join Us:
  • Work in state-of-the-art high-containment (BSL-3/4) research facilities
  • Gain experience in emerging infectious disease research and host-pathogen interactions
  • Build skills in animal models, immunology techniques, and data analysis
  • Collaborate with a dynamic team of scientists in a mission-driven research environment

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
This role is based in a laboratory setting with some flexibility for approved remote work depending on responsibilities. Physical activities may include standing, walking, and lifting light items (up to 10 lbs). Responsibilities include working with laboratory animals and infectious agents in high-containment (BSL-3 and BSL-4) environments.
