Position Summary:

The Commodity Merchandiser is responsible for managing the procurement, merchandising, marketing, and logistical coordination of canola and cottonseed-derived products fo. This position plays a critical role in maximizing margins, maintaining adequate raw material supplies, managing commodity price exposure, and developing strong relationships with cotton gins, producers, customers, brokers, and transportation providers.

Plainsman Company, LLC is a leading cottonseed processor and agricultural commodity merchandising company headquartered in Lubbock, Texas. We source, process, and market cottonseed, cottonseed oil, meal, hulls, and other agricultural commodities throughout the United States and internationally.
We are seeking a motivated, relationship-driven Commodity Merchandiser to help expand our merchandising business located in Lubbock, TX. This role offers the opportunity to develop supplier and customer relationships, identify market opportunities, negotiate profitable transactions, and play a key role in the continued growth of Plainsman.
The ideal candidate enjoys building relationships, analyzing markets, solving problems, and creating value for both suppliers and customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Originate cottonseed and other agricultural commodities from growers, gins, and commercial suppliers.
  • Market cottonseed oil, meal, hulls, and other feed ingredients to domestic and export customers.
  • Develop and maintain long-term relationships with suppliers, customers, brokers, and industry partners.
  • Negotiate purchase and sales contracts while managing company risk and profitability.
  • Monitor commodity markets, freight, supply fundamentals, and industry trends.
  • Identify new merchandising opportunities and grow existing business.
  • Coordinate contract execution with logistics, operations, and accounting.
  • Provide market intelligence and pricing recommendations to management.
  • Represent Plainsman professionally throughout the agricultural industry.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Business, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in grain merchandising, feed ingredient trading, commodity merchandising, agricultural sales, or purchasing is preferred but not required.
  • Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Analytical thinker with strong attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while collaborating with a team.
  • Comfortable making decisions in a fast-moving commodity market.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and other business software.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the region to meet customers and suppliers.

Physical and Work Requirements
  • Ability to work in an agricultural processing and industrial mill environment when necessary.
  • Ability to visit cotton gins, suppliers, customers, and other agricultural facilities.
  • May require occasional travel throughout the region.
  • Ability to work extended hours during periods of high cottonseed availability, seasonal ginning activity, or significant market volatility.

Work Schedule and Availability

The Commodity Merchandiser must understand that agricultural commodity markets and cottonseed processing operations may require flexibility beyond a traditional Monday–Friday office schedule. During peak cottonseed procurement periods, significant market movements, supply disruptions, customer emergencies, or mill operational issues, the employee may be required to respond outside of normal business hours.

The employee is expected to maintain reliable communication with management, suppliers, customers, and other key business contacts during periods when timely decisions are necessary.
