What are the typical career advancement opportunities for someone in a commissioning role?

Many commissioning professionals start as Commissioning Engineers or Agents and can advance to Senior Commissioning Engineer, Commissioning Manager, or Project Manager roles with experience and proven leadership skills. As you gain technical expertise and demonstrate successful project delivery, you may also move into specialized consulting, quality assurance, or operations management positions. The role often involves working closely with design, construction, and operations teams, which helps build a strong foundation for broader leadership positions in building management or engineering firms. Career growth is generally tied to a combination of hands-on experience, continued learning through certifications, and the ability to coordinate complex projects effectively.

We believe strong teams, trusted partnerships, and technical excellence drive sustainable success.
The Opportunity
The Commissioning Manager is accountable for leading the technical execution and commissioning of Thermo Systems projects, ensuring all contracted Building Automation System (BAS), automation, and integrated control system scope is delivered in accordance with customer requirements. This role plays a key part in the successful delivery of Building Automation Systems (BAS), industrial automation, and integrated facility control systems by ensuring hardware, software, networking, and sequence of operations perform as designed. Partnering closely with the Project Manager and Site Manager, this role ensures that engineered solutions are correctly implemented, tested, commissioned, and accepted by the customer.
The Commissioning Manager leads on-site commissioning activities, develops and executes testing strategy, and coordinates engineering and technical resources. This role is highly customer-facing and relationship-driven, requiring strong communication and coordination with project teams, clients, contractors, and commissioning agents. The CXM is focused on technical quality, functional performance, and system readiness.
What You'll Do
Technical Scope Ownership & Engineering Coordination:
  • Own contracted technical scope delivery, ensuring systems are implemented and commissioned to specification.
  • Coordinate with controls engineering teams to validate controller programming, graphics, alarms, trends, point databases, network architecture, and sequence of operations prior to commissioning.
  • Advise the Project Manager on staffing, commissioning strategy, and schedule constraints.
  • Coordinate with engineering teams to resolve technical issues and ensure deliverables support testing.

Commissioning & Start-Up Leadership:
  • Lead field commissioning activities, directing technical resources from pre-functional checks through final acceptance.
  • Oversee and execute FAT/SAT and commissioning test plans; serve as the primary on-site coordination point.
  • Lead functional performance testing of Building Automation Systems (BAS), including DDC controllers, supervisory software, operator workstations, field devices, and integrated third-party systems.
  • Verify control sequences, alarm functionality, trending, graphics, and system interoperability across HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and other integrated building systems.
  • Drive punch list resolution and re-testing through to close-out.

Quality & Technical Assurance:
  • Ensure delivered systems meet contractual quality and performance standards.
  • Review and approve commissioning documentation, test reports, and turnover packages.
  • Validate controller databases, point-to-point checkout, network communications, software revisions, backups, and cybersecurity requirements prior to customer turnover.
  • Maintain accurate as-built records throughout the commissioning lifecycle.
  • Monitor, maintain, and lead commissioning documentation efforts across customer-specific platforms such as CX Alloy, BIM 360, and similar tools.

Customer Technical Interface:
  • Serve as Thermo Systems' primary technical liaison with customer engineering and operations teams.
  • Lead technical reviews, demonstrations, and acceptance activities through final sign-off.
  • Provide technical leadership during integrated systems testing (IST), demonstrating BAS functionality and system performance to customers, commissioning agents, and third-party stakeholders.
  • Support operational readiness, including customer training and knowledge transfer.
  • Effectively de-escalate priority conflicts with customers and trade partners, facilitating mutually beneficial solutions that keep projects on track.

Cross-Functional Project Integration:
  • Partner with the Project Manager on schedule alignment, milestone tracking, and risk mitigation.
  • Coordinate with the Site Manager on installation readiness and commissioning sequencing.
  • Provide technical status updates for project reporting and governance.

What We're Looking For
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, Associate's degree in a related technical discipline, or equivalent hands-on field experience.
  • 5-8 years of commissioning experience, including 3-4 years of technical field experience in commissioning, controls, automation, or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience leading field teams and managing technical resources across concurrent project activities.
  • Experience serving as a primary client contact or site-level technical liaison.
  • Industrial automation or systems integration background.
  • Experience commissioning Building Automation Systems (BAS) utilizing platforms such as Siemens, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, Tridium Niagara, Distech, Alerton, Automated Logic, or similar DDC platforms.
  • Experience troubleshooting HVAC control systems, field instrumentation, control panels, and BAS communications networks.
  • Working knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, OPC, MQTT, or other industrial/building communication protocols.
  • Experience with integrated systems testing (IST), sequence of operations validation, and owner demonstrations.
  • FAT/SAT and commissioning methodology experience in data center or critical infrastructure environments.
  • Multidisciplinary engineering coordination experience across MEP and controls disciplines.
  • Experience with customer commissioning platforms such as CX Alloy or BIM 360.

Skills & Qualifications:
  • Strong understanding of commissioning processes, MEP systems, controls, and building automation.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and commissioning plans.
  • Strong customer-facing communication skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic field environment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Sound problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and accountability.
