Commission Writing information

What is commission writing?

Commission writing is the process of creating written content based on specific requests or requirements from a client. This can include a wide range of content types such as articles, stories, reports, or marketing materials. Commissioned writers work closely with clients to understand their needs and produce tailored content, often adhering to set deadlines and guidelines. The work may be one-time or ongoing, depending on the arrangement. Many freelance writers and agencies offer commission writing services for businesses, organizations, and individuals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a commission writer?

To thrive as a Commission Writer, you need excellent writing and research skills, a strong grasp of grammar, and often a relevant degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems, word processing software, and sometimes SEO tools or style guides is typically required. Strong client communication, adaptability, and time management are critical soft skills for meeting diverse client needs and tight deadlines. These abilities ensure the delivery of high-quality, tailored content that meets client specifications and maintains professional standards.

What are some common challenges commission writers face when managing multiple clients and deadlines?

Commission writers often juggle assignments from various clients, each with their own unique requirements and deadlines. Balancing these projects requires strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. Clear communication with clients is crucial to prevent misunderstandings regarding project scope and delivery timelines. Additionally, commission writers must be adaptable, as client expectations and feedback can change quickly, requiring flexibility in both writing style and workflow.

Job description

FOR MORE THAN 80 YEARS, Natus has been working in collaboration with clinicians to deliver industry-leading neuro solutions that help providers more easily make sense of the body's signals.
Engineered with input from those who have lived the care experience, our technology simplifies complex processes and improves accuracy and efficiency. There is a role for everyone who wants to be part of the innovative solutions at Natus Neuro.
Are you someone who can take complex sales data, turn it into accurate commission calculations, and explain exactly how you got there?
Natus is looking for a Senior Commissions Analyst to own the end-to-end commission process for our global sales organization. Reporting to the Global Sales Commission Manager, you'll play a critical role in ensuring our sales teams are paid accurately and on time while partnering across Sales, Sales Operations, Finance, Accounting, Payroll, and HR.
This is a highly visible role for someone who loves working with data, understands the importance of getting the details right, and can confidently explain complex commission calculations to everyone from frontline sales representatives to senior sales leaders.
What You'll Get to Do
  • Calculate monthly and quarterly sales commissions, ensuring payments align with the approved Annual Compensation Plan.
  • Analyze and organize large volumes of data into clear, meaningful reports used by Sales, Sales Operations, Accounting, Finance, Payroll, HR, and management.
  • Maintain documentation for the end-to-end commission process and clearly communicate processes and requirements across the sales organization.
  • Research commission payments, sales discrepancies, and other compensation questions, resolving issues accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Partner directly with sales executives, sales managers, and frontline sales teams to answer commission questions and respond to disputes or discrepancies.
  • Explain complex commission calculations, quota assignments, determinations, and compensation concepts clearly, both in writing and during meetings.
  • Collaborate across functions and levels of the organization to create positive communication and seamless processes.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, evolving global environment, adapting to different time zones, nationalities, and cultures.
  • Use technology, including AI tools, to help simplify, accelerate, and improve manual Excel-based commission calculations.
  • Take on additional projects and responsibilities as business needs evolve.

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Mathematics, or a related field from a four-year college or university.
  • 2-5 years of related experience and/or training.
  • Experience collaborating with sales teams and supporting commission or incentive compensation processes.
  • Advanced communication skills with the ability to work effectively with sales executives and managers, frontline sales teams, Accounting, Finance, HR, Payroll, and other business partners.
  • Ability to explain complex commission calculations and compensation concepts in a way that is clear and understandable.
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail. In this role, accuracy is not simply a nice-to-have. You'll be calculating compensation for our sales organization, so payments need to be accurate, timely, and as error-free as possible.
  • Strong collaboration, creativity, teamwork, and proven leadership capabilities.
  • Experience working in a global organization is preferred.

Excel & Systems Expertise
You should be highly comfortable working with complex data and spreadsheets, including:
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, SUMIF/SUMIFS, XLOOKUP, VLOOKUP, and complex nested formulas across linked tabs and files.
  • Experience accurately calculating complex formulas, commissions, percentages, interest, and other financial amounts, including the use of basic algebra within Excel workbooks.
  • Familiarity with integrated ERP and CRM solutions, particularly Oracle EBS and Salesforce (SFDC).
  • Experience with enterprise commission platforms such as Xactly, SPIFF, Anaplan, CaptivateIQ, or similar systems.
  • Experience managing and calculating commissions manually in Excel.
  • Experience using AI to simplify and accelerate manual Excel calculations.
  • Ability to research and interpret technical accounting guidance.

Communication & Analytical Skills
You'll need the ability to read, analyze, and interpret business publications, professional journals, and technical procedures, as well as create reports, business correspondence, and process documentation.
You should also be comfortable presenting information and responding to questions from managers, internal customers, sales teams, and other stakeholders.
Strong reasoning and problem-solving skills are important, including the ability to interpret written, verbal, and visual instructions and work through problems involving multiple variables.
Travel & Leadership
Travel: Minimal
Supervisory Responsibilities: None required
While this position does not directly supervise employees, we're looking for someone who demonstrates leadership, ownership, sound judgment, and confidence working across teams and levels of the organization.
Work Environment
This role is primarily performed in a standard, quiet office environment and involves regular computer and keyboard use, sitting, speaking, and listening. The position also requires close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
Why This Role Matters
Sales compensation sits at the intersection of people, data, systems, and trust. When it works well, our sales organization can focus on what they do best because they know their compensation is being handled accurately, consistently, and transparently.
If you enjoy solving complex problems, digging into data, collaborating with people across the business, and making sure every decimal lands where it belongs, this is an opportunity to make a very visible impact at Natus.
