Job description

Position Function:

Universal Banker Leadership Development Program positions combine the core sales, service, operational, and risk-management responsibilities of a Universal Banker with a structured development path toward future branch leadership role. Incumbents deliver an exceptional customer experience, build and retain customer relationships, identify customer banking needs, cross-sell appropriate products and services, and refer customers to business partners and specialists, as appropriate. They are responsible for meeting assigned operational, sales, service, referral, and risk-management goals while supporting the overall success of the branch.

Incumbents open consumer and business deposit products; accept and close secured and unsecured consumer and scored business loan and line of credit applications; and may be certified to accept and close home equity lines of credit and loans, as applicable. In addition to performing Universal Banker responsibilities, participants in this program complete formal training, on-the-job training, mentoring, coaching, developmental branch assignments, department rotations, and certification-based progression designed to prepare them for future Assistant Manager opportunities.

The program curriculum is generally designed to be completed within approximately 18 to 30 months, depending on the participant’s experience, demonstrated proficiency, performance, and available placement opportunities. Progression through Levels I, II, and III reflects increasing capability, independence, complexity of work, and leadership readiness.

Level I focuses on foundational teller, new account, service, and relationship-building skills. Level II expands into broader product knowledge, credit-related exposure, branch operations, and developmental leadership exposure. Level III emphasizes advanced operational capability, team leadership, branch balancing/open-close responsibilities, problem resolution, coaching support, and readiness for placement into an Assistant Manager role.

Performs all duties and interacts with internal and external customers in a manner that is expressly aligned with the Company's Core Values of approaching all actions with a “Voyaging Spirit” and being “Positively Ohana”. Exhibits core competencies that result in consistent delivery of positive Customer Interactions, Empowerment and Ownership and demonstrates key professional and performance skills such as Active Listening, effective Oral and Written Communication, Action and Solution Oriented and Thoroughness.

Primary Accountabilities:

Universal Banker I:

  • Open consumer deposit products and related services.
  • Profile customers and identify needs.
  • Cross-sell and refer to business partners.
  • Support customer retention and branch campaigns.
  • Complete core certifications and training.
  • Process routine transactions accurately and balance cash daily.
  • Learn holds, cautions, stop payments, cash buy/sell, and operating routines.
  • Demonstrate service excellence, compliance, and risk awareness.
  • Complete post-training assignments and proficiency checklists.
  • Work under close supervision.

Universal Banker II:

  • Open consumer and business deposit products.
  • Accept/close consumer loan and personal line applications; assist with scored business products.
  • Manage and deepen customer relationships.
  • Analyze basic financial information.
  • Meet assigned production and referral goals.
  • Perform a broader range of branch operational functions with increasing independence.
  • Support opening/closing, balancing, vault/cash dispenser activities, and issue resolution.
  • Participate in rotations and special assignments.
  • Provide on-the-job support to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrate growing judgment and accountability.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Universal Banker I and II:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university, or equivalent relevant work experience preferred.

Experience:

Universal Banker I:

  • 1+ years of experience in demonstrated success in sales and customer service required.
  • 1+ years of Branch/bank operations experience required or completion of Teller & New Account Certification within 6 months of hire.

Universal Banker II:

  • 2+ years of experience in demonstrated success in sales and customer service required.
  • 2+ years of Branch/bank operations experience required.
  • 1+ years of experience explaining credit products and accepting/closing consumer and business loan applications required.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential and developmental coaching exposure

License/Certification:

Universal Banker I:

  • Registration with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry (NMLS) is required prior to performing any duties of a Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO), if applicable. Obtain within 6 months of hire, if applicable.
  • Notary Public commission and Medallion Stamp authorization obtain within required program timeframes.

Universal Banker II:

  • Registration with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry (NMLS) is required prior to performing any duties of a Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO), if applicable.
  • Notary Public commission and Medallion Stamp authorization obtain within required program timeframes.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to perform light physical work and to move or lift items including but not limited to boxes, files and papers up to 20 pounds unless otherwise as indicated.
  • Must be able to operate and proficiently use standard office equipment, including phone, copier, personal computer and/or other work related mechanical or electronic devices and applications.
  • Must be able to clearly communicate verbally and in writing with all internal and external customers. Must also be able to hear sufficiently to engage in daily discussions and interactions.
  • Must be able to read and understand bank-related documents.
  • Must be able to work in a conventional office setting, involving sitting at a desk or workstation for long periods of time. Must also be able to adapt to different work environments as needed to perform the job.
