Position Overview

Northwell Health is seeking an experienced Pathologists' Assistant to join the Department of Pathology at South Shore University Hospital. This is an excellent opportunity to work within one of New York's leading healthcare systems, supporting a high-volume pathology laboratory and collaborating closely with pathologists to deliver timely and accurate diagnoses.

The Pathologists' Assistant will play a critical role in surgical pathology operations, including gross examination and dissection of complex specimens, frozen section support, tissue procurement, and specimen preparation for ancillary testing.
 

Responsibilities
  • Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens.
  • Prepare and submit tissue for histologic evaluation and ancillary studies.
  • Assist pathologists with frozen section procedures and intraoperative consultations.
  • Perform specimen photography and maintain detailed pathology documentation.
  • Procure tissue samples for immunohistochemistry, molecular testing, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and other specialized studies.
  • Ensure accurate specimen identification, handling, and tracking throughout the pathology process.
  • Maintain compliance with CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and institutional quality standards.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support pathology workflow to maintain efficient turnaround times.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program.
  • ASCP Certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA-ASCP) or eligibility to obtain certification.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical pathology grossing techniques and specimen management.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred

  • Previous surgical pathology experience.
  • Frozen section experience.
  • Experience working in a high-volume academic or community hospital laboratory.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems and digital pathology workflows.
