Summary Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Under supervision, employees in this class perform routine law enforcement, crime prevention and detection, and detention activities in the Sheriff's Office.

Examples of Duties Patrols assigned areas for the protection of life and property Enforces County ordinances and assists local peace officers in their enforcement activities Investigates accidents and administers first aid Makes preliminary investigations of burglary, theft, rape and other criminal violations Classifies criminal complaints and passes them on to investigators Sets up and maintains road blocks, conducts stakeouts, makes Apprehends and transports suspects Conducts prisoners to and from court and guards them while in court Transports prisoners to and from the Rehabilitation Center and other points Receives and investigates complaints of violations by or against juveniles Confers with juveniles and their parents Searches for, photographs, collects, preserves and transports physical evidence Evaluates and compares latent fingerprints Typical Qualifications Requirements: License Required: Valid State Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G. E.

D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificate. Training: Possession of a State Basic P.

O. S. T.

Certificate and experience in law enforcement within the past three years, or successful completion within the last three years of the State Basic Course Equivalency Examination administered by the State of State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, or possession of a valid certificate from a State P. O. S.

T. approved Basic Academy. Academy certificates are valid for three years from date of completion of the academy program unless extended by employment as a full-time Peace Officer or Level 1 Reserve.

Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship a minimum of one year ago. Age: At least 21 years of age on the date of application. Physical Requirements: Ability to meet such health standards as may be prescribed by the County Medical Consultant.

Hearing: Must not have suffered a hearing loss of over 25 decibles in the 500, 1000 and 2000 frequency ranges. Visual Acuity: 20/100 uncorrected each eye; corrected to 20/30 each eye. Background: A thorough background investigation, which will include a report writing exercise, a polygraph examination and psychological testing, shall be conducted according to the specifications of the State of State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, and shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state or any other state or in any federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any other state or in any federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state.

Other Requirements: Employees in this class are who, as a part of their regularly assigned duties are required to operate a motor vehicle, will be subject to drug and alcohol testing under provisions of the County Drug and Alcohol Testing Program. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Ability To: Read and understand departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and ordinances and general literature pertaining to law enforcement activities Adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action, giving due regard to the surrounding hazards and circumstances of each situation Understand and follow written and oral directions Keep accurate records and submit clear reports Learn the use and care of small firearms Deal with people of different racial, ethnic, and economic groups in a tactful and effective manner Work under physical and mental pressure and in potentially hazardous situations Selection Criteria The selection process will include an evaluation of: Minimum Qualifications Training & Experience (an evaluation of length of time in relevant work experience) Multiple Choice Test (50% of overall score) Panel Interview (50% of overall score) The multiple choice test will be offered at 3 different locations. Candidate's location preference will be taken into account for scheduling of the test.

Applicant's who qualify for veteran's preference will receive an additional five points added to their overall score. Some positions require the ability to speak Spanish.
