Job description

Our team is responsible for the real-time 3D rendering engine behind Apple Maps and MapKit. We’re building a Map rendering system that enables rich visuals, high performance, and seamless user experience across Apple and web. Your work will have an impact on day to day experiences of users of Maps across multiple first and third party products. We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager who is excited by graphics, performance, and system architecture challenges, and who thrives in a collaborative, fast-moving environment.

In this role you will manage and grow a team of rendering and graphics engineers who build, optimize, and maintain our real-time rendering engine. You will define the technical vision for the rendering pipeline, drive feature and performance road-maps, collaborate cross-functionally with multiple teams including product, design, cartography and pipeline, and ensure that our rendering engine supports the future of our interactive app.","responsibilities":"Lead, mentor, and manage a team of engineers with diverse experience; conduct 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development planning.
Own the architecture and technical roadmap for rendering components (shading, lighting, materials, effects, multi-platform support).
Collaborate with product, design, cartography, and pipeline engineering teams to deliver integrated rendering features.
Drive initiatives to prototype and explore new rendering capabilities.
Ensure high performance, scalability, and robustness of rendering systems across mobile, desktop, and/or XR platforms.
Drive best practices for code quality, performance profiling, memory/CPU/GPU optimization, and real-time engine reliability.
Recruit, hire, and onboard new team members; build a culture of innovation, technical excellence, and ownership.
Manage project planning, prioritization, resource allocation, and stakeholder communication.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with advanced rendering techniques (PBR, global illumination, ray tracing, real-time effects).
Prior experience on Web/AR/VR/XR platforms or multi-device interactive applications.
Expertise in performance profiling, GPU/CPU optimization, memory usage, and bottleneck analysis.
Familiarity with engine architecture, ECS design, asset pipelines, and tooling for graphic/interactive systems.
Experience with global teams or distributed engineering organizations.
MS in Computer Science or related field.
Minimum Qualifications
5 + years of engineering team management experience, leading teams of ~6-8 engineers in a software/graphics environment.
Strong background in real-time rendering, graphics pipeline development, or engine development.
Proficiency in C++ and experience with modern rendering APIs (e.g., DirectX12, Vulkan, Metal) and real-time engines (e.g., Unreal, Unity, or custom).
Track record of shipping interactive applications or graphics features, with attention to visual quality, performance, and cross-platform support.
Excellent people-management skills: coaching, mentoring, setting technical direction, building teams.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, working effectively across product, design, and engineering teams.
BS in Computer Science or related field.
Pay & Benefits
At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $198,300 and $342,800, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
