Primary Function
The Mathematics Specialist (PK 12) provides division-level leadership to ensure full implementation of a comprehensive and rigorous mathematics program, including:
  • Preparing schools for full implementation of updated Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) and related instructional guides.
  • Provide division-wide leadership for curriculum design, resource adoption, and instructional programming in K 12 mathematics aligned with VDOE standards.
  • Develop, implement, and refine comprehensive mathematics instructional plans to improve achievement and close gaps.
  • Ensure curriculum aligns with state, national, and college-readiness expectations.

The Mathematics Specialist builds the capacity of FCPS teachers, coaches, and administrators to deliver rigorous, research-based mathematics instruction that improves student outcomes and aligns with evolving expectations.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in mathematics, curriculum & instruction, or educational leadership.
  • Valid Virginia teaching license.
  • Minimum three years of successful teaching experience.

Preferred
  • At least three years of math-focused leadership or coaching experience, with proven results of excellence.
  • Mathematics Specialist endorsement strongly preferred.
  • At least three years of demonstrated leadership or coaching experience in mathematics
  • Knowledge of research-based mathematics instruction and evidence-based intervention strategies
  • Familiarity with current VDOE mathematics initiatives including HQIM adoption, updated SOL expectations, and statewide professional learning priorities
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills

Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership & Collaboration
  • Lead FCPS implementation of High-Quality Instructional Materials in mathematics in accordance with state requirements, supporting schools in curriculum adoption and classroom use.
  • Collaborate with mathematics coaches to ensure alignment of curriculum, pacing, and assessment practices with the updated VDOE Mathematics Standards of Learning and instructional guidance.
  • Conduct informal instructional walkthroughs with administrators and mathematics coaches to strengthen Tier 1 instruction, identify areas for intervention, and support effective use of HQIM.
  • Support vertical articulation of mathematics learning across PK 12 to ensure coherent progression of mathematical concepts and readiness for future pathways.

Professional Learning & Research
  • Coordinate and deliver professional development aligned with VDOE's statewide HQIM implementation webinars, instructional material expectations, and updated SOL frameworks.
  • Facilitate curriculum-based professional learning (CBPL) that is job-embedded, sustained, and directly connected to FCPS instructional materials, mirroring state Mathematics Innovation Grant models.
  • Ensure teachers and coaches have access to updated VDOE instructional guides, resources, and revisions as new statewide SOL updates are deployed.
  • Participate in regional and state-level professional networks to remain current with emerging VDOE initiatives, including the Mathematics Task Force opportunities.

Data-Driven Support & Program Monitoring
  • Collaborate with division and school-based mathematics coaches to analyze student performance data to inform instruction, intervention, and enrichment, consistent with VDOE's emphasis on using balanced assessment data to support improved student outcomes.
  • Support development and monitoring of mathematics intervention entry and exit criteria that strengthen Tier 1 and Tier 2 instructional supports, aligning with statewide goals to close achievement gaps.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of math programs and interventions, ensuring continuous refinement.
  • Prepare data reports, presentations, and FCPS monitoring metrics aligned with state expectations around HQIM fidelity and SOL readiness.

Program & Initiative Coordination
  • Support schools in implementing model classrooms, coaching cycles, and collaborative planning structures.
  • Curate and distribute mathematics resources connected to updated SOL content, HQIM materials, and state-provided instructional supports.
  • Coordinate division wide mathematics enrichment opportunities, competitions, and family engagement events aligned with VDOE goals to deepen mathematics understanding and family involvement.
  • Oversee and evaluate specialized math programs for advanced math pathways and acceleration classes.
