Job description

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE

The GIS Technician will provide foundational support for CAD and GIS tasks within gas distribution operations. This position focuses on data entry, basic drafting, and assisting with field verification. The technician will learn company standards, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements while supporting routine projects and maintaining accurate records in GIS and CAD systems.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Update GIS database with as-built data, including service lines, valves, and meters
  • Prepare simple CAD drawings for minor gas projects and service connections
  • Assist with GPS data collection and field verification using Trimble units
  • Perform basic QA/QC checks on GIS data and CAD drawings to ensure accuracy
  • Respond to internal requests for maps and facility information in a timely manner
  • Support senior technicians and engineers with data preparation for regulatory reports
  • Participate in safety training and adhere to all company safety standards

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Minimum education required of the position

  • Associate-level coursework or training in Vo-Tech, CAD, or GIS

Minimum experience required of the position

  • 0–2 years of experience in drafting or GIS preferred

Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities preferred of the position

  • Basic proficiency in AutoCAD and ArcGIS
  • Demonstratable proficiency in gas distribution terminology and components
  • Ability to read simple engineering drawings and plats
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn new technologies
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft 365 tools for documentation and reporting

Any certificates, licenses, etc. required for the position

  • Vo-Tech/CAD/GIS Certificate (holding this certificate satisfies the minimum education requirement)

Physical Requirements

  • Able to operate a personal computer, either desktop or laptop.
  • Able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Able to operate a copy machine, fax machine, calculator, telephone and other miscellaneous office equipment.
  • Able to exert up to 10 Lbs. of force occasionally, and /or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push or otherwise move objects.
