What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the commission game developer position, and why are they important?

A Commission Game Developer needs strong programming abilities, proficiency in game engines like Unity or Unreal, and a portfolio demonstrating completed game projects. Familiarity with version control systems, 2D/3D asset integration, and possibly certifications in game development or computer science are also valuable. Excellent client communication, time management, and adaptability help developers fulfill unique project requirements and deadlines. These skills ensure high-quality deliverables, foster client satisfaction, and enable success in a project-based, commission-driven environment.

What types of clients and projects can a commission game developer typically expect to work with or on?

As a Commission Game Developer, you may be hired by indie studios, startups, educational organizations, or individual entrepreneurs looking to create custom games or interactive experiences. Projects can range from small mobile games and prototypes to more complex PC or web-based titles, often with specific gameplay mechanics or design constraints dictated by the client. You will frequently consult with clients to clarify requirements, provide updates, and iterate on feedback throughout the development process. This variety provides valuable experience across genres and platforms, and can help expand your portfolio and professional network in the gaming industry.

What is a commission game developer?

A Commission Game Developer is a game developer who creates games or game assets on a contractual or commission basis. Instead of working as a full-time employee for a single company, they take on projects from clients or studios, often as freelancers. Their work can include developing entire games, designing specific game mechanics, or creating assets like characters, environments, or music. Payment structures vary and may be based on milestones, revenue sharing, or a flat fee.

You will work at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems and the frontier of agentic AI, architecting the platforms, workflows, and guardrails that let autonomous and human-in-the-loop AI systems do real work at scale. If you want to work where cutting-edge AI meets production-grade engineering โ€” and influence how an entire division builds โ€” this is that role.## ****What You'll Do***** Architect & build: Lead the design of critical systems โ€” agentic pipelines, orchestration platforms, and the services around them โ€” running design reviews and contributing hands-on to development.* Ship agentic systems: Productionize LLM-powered workflows โ€” multi-agent orchestration, tool use, retrieval/knowledge systems, and human-in-the-loop control planes that are reliable, observable, and cost-aware.* Define quality for AI: Build the evaluation harnesses, benchmarks, and automated quality gates that measure and enforce quality in non-deterministic systems, and catch regressions in agent and model behavior.* Incubate new ideas: Rapidly prototype POCs that validate strategic bets, especially at the intersection of AI and existing platforms.* Advise & de-risk: Guide complex technical decisions, help teams adopt AI pragmatically, and avoid the failure modes of hype-driven design.* Surface risks: Identify blind spots, technical risks, and inefficiencies โ€” including the novel risks of autonomous systems โ€” and proactively drive solutions.* Set the technical bar: Write exemplary code across the ecosystem, and raise the level of engineering through architectural reviews, mentorship, and knowledge sharing across teams.## ****What We're Looking For***** 10+ years of hands-on engineering in software development, system design, or architecture.* Applied AI / agentic engineering: Real experience with modern LLMs and agentic frameworks โ€” prompt/context engineering, tool use, RAG, orchestration, and evaluation โ€” including the sharp edges (latency, cost, reliability, non-determinism, safety).* Production AI systems: A track record of taking AI/ML-driven features from prototype to production with proper evaluation, monitoring, and guardrails.* Distributed systems & data: Strong background in scalable, fault-tolerant services and in streaming/pipeline technologies (Kafka, Flink, Spark).* Cross-functional impact: Ability to drive alignment and technical decisions across teams, and to mentor engineers toward better technical decision-making. *This range reflects the anticipated base salary for this position. Beyond base salary, this role may be eligible for equity awards and participation in our company incentive plans (such as annual discretionary bonuses or sales commissions). The final offer amount will depend on several factors, including geographic location and the candidateโ€™s relevant experience, professional background, and skill set.* **Benefits** At Unity, we want our team members to thrive.
