Job description

Your Opportunity:

The Pediatric Diabetes Nurse provides initial and ongoing education and support in diabetes management to the pediatric patient and family. The role includes RN support to physicians and the interdisciplinary team for all clinics, nursing support for families via phones/email/pager, caregiver/teacher workshops, and educating and teaching in the Insulin pump program as a primary team member. The nurse in the Pediatric Diabetes Education Centre (PDEC) also functions as a clinical resource expert to Stollery staff of the other Inpatient/Ambulatory Pediatric Units and delivers high-quality patient care while also supporting/mentoring staff within the department. The PDEC Registered Nurse is required to participate in program development, quality improvement, research, education, and clinical teaching activities. The Registered Nurse is expected to provide safe and effective nursing care according to AHS/Stollery hospital policies and procedures and CRNA Nursing Care Standards. A Family Centered Care approach to patient/family care is required.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, you must complete the following free courses: CRNA Medication Management (Chapters 1-4), available at https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/learning-and-development/learning-modules/ and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification, available at https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Active registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Two years of recent Pediatric Ambulatory experience in Pediatric Diabetes is required. Extensive patient education and experience supporting patients and families by telephone/email is required. Connect Care/Epic and strong computer/technology skills required. Must be able to pass the Stollery Medication Administration exam, completed at the time of interview with 90% or more. PEARs required (may be completed prior to or after hiring). Excellent assessment, interpersonal, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills needed. Demonstrated ability to apply teaching and learning theory to children and their families required. Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

Preferred Qualifications:

Baccalaureate degree in Nursing. Certified Diabetes Educator status preferred. Preference will be given to applicants who have recent knowledge and experience working with children who have diabetes in both acute and ambulatory settings. Experience with or knowledge of insulin pumps preferred. Three years' experience in Pediatric acute care inpatients preferred. PALS preferred.
