Job description

Job Description

Eccalon LLC is seeking a Power Engineer with deep expertise in grid-scale energy generation, interconnection design, and storage integration. The ideal candidate will be a forward-thinking electrical engineer with a strong understanding of renewable energy systems, battery storage technologies, and data center power architecture. This individual will be responsible for designing and optimizing infrastructure that enables solar and other distributed energy sources to charge battery systems, which in turn supply resilient and efficient power to data centers and the broader electric grid.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and model integrated energy systems involving solar, wind, batteries, and conventional generation to support grid and data center loads.
  • Develop electrical interconnect strategies to ensure safe, reliable, and standards-compliant connections between renewable assets, energy storage, and grid infrastructure.
  • Perform power flow analysis, protection coordination, and stability studies using industry tools (e.g., PSS/E, ETAP, PSCAD, or similar).
  • Support the design of microgrids, islanding systems, and backup power solutions for mission-critical facilities.
  • Collaborate with civil, mechanical, and software engineers to ensure multidisciplinary system integration.
  • Evaluate interconnection standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., FERC, NERC, IEEE 1547, UL 9540) and guide system designs to ensure compliance.
  • Work with utility companies, ISOs, and project developers to secure interconnection approvals and optimize grid tie-in strategies.
  • Develop technical documentation including one-line diagrams, load studies, interconnect applications, and power purchase agreements (PPAs) where applicable.
  • Contribute to proposal development, R&D efforts, and system prototyping for defense and commercial energy resilience projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor?s, Master?s, or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in power systems engineering, preferably with a focus on renewable integration and grid interconnects.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical system design, high/medium/low voltage systems, and control systems for DERs (Distributed Energy Resources).
  • Familiarity with battery technologies (e.g., Li-ion, flow batteries), power converters/inverters, and energy management systems.
  • Understanding of data center power requirements, redundancy architectures (e.g., N+1, 2N), and grid support strategies.
  • Experience working with utility grid codes, interconnection standards, and renewable energy permitting processes.
  • Proficient in power simulation and modeling tools.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present technical concepts to cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
  • Experience with military or federal energy resilience programs (e.g., DoD ESPC, microgrid pilots).
  • Working knowledge of SCADA, DERMS, or energy market integration platforms.
  • Familiarity with government acquisition processes or SBIR/STTR projects.
